The answer may surprise you, according to a veterinarian who has investigated how physical or mental discomfort can leave a horse sleep deprived and too tired to stay on his feet.

Sleep Deprived… Yes my mare ( CANDELA ) of 12 yrs of age does not lay down to rest she does roll just about everyday. She has been doing this since she came with her baby..she was 8 then. There is no physical problems Candela is quite large, her corral is quite spacious. What can I do, if there is anything to have her relax enough to lay down. Candela was in pasture before she came to
me, I believe she stands watch over the others.
I had two mares that did that almost falling over thing for years! One had a colt that I never sold but did wean, but I think she still thought she had to watch out for him. The other had an arthritic knee before I bought her and was doing that almost falling way before I got her. She was the bottom of the pecking order in a small turnout with 5 other horses before I got her.
Both would roll but never laid down. It was very sad to watch them but not enough reason to put them down. I tried seperating the mare and her son in seperate pastures but that didn’t help either.
