Lateral Flexibility In Horses

Question: I have a wonderful, cooperative, 6-year-old Quarter Horse mare that was foaled on our farm. I use natural-horsemanship training techniques. The only problem I have is with lateral flexion. She just can't bend her neck around in either direction, and she isn't getting any more flexible with time and repetition. I'm wondering whether she might've had an injury. Should I consult an equine chiropractor?

Answer: Your mare should have enough neck flexibility to lick both sides of her body. I suspect she has a birth deformity or an injury of the joints between her neck and head. I doubt a chiropractor can help, but you can ask one to take a look. Also have your veterinarian take X-rays. What you describe is abnormal and should be looked into, not only for her sake, but also because her limitations could put you at risk for injury.
