Clinton Anderson: Leading a Foal

Before you halter a foal, teach him how to follow willingly beside you on a circle.

Even before you teach a foal how to respond to halter pressure, teach him how to follow beside you on a circle, using two loops of cord to guide him. This method is safer than starting with the halter because you can guide both ends of the foal without having to draw on his head and risk his pulling out of fear and injuring himself.

With loops around his neck and his hindquarters, you'll learn how to influence both ends of the foal, arcing his body around you in a circle.
