Any experienced breeder knows that there is much more than just matching a mare and a horse to breed good animals. They also know that there are hundreds of different breeding methods. If, however, one takes the time to investigate what is the secret behind the success of any and all traditional breeders, one will find out that, far from being an esoteric, sophisticated process, it is just a very simple and straightforward procedure which, at the same time, demands a lot of discipline and perseverance.
The most basic and fundamental of all principles is genealogy. By this we mean the creation and preservation of superior consanguineous genetic material through countless generations of the same families of superb animals. It has been practiced since pre-historical ages, as Aristotle prescribes, and could produce disastrous consequences if ignored.
The building up of a genealogy takes generations. It is a trial and error experimental process that demands knowledge, good sense, patience and perseverance, but also a lot of passion. Breeding is pure Creation and, like any complex conception process, it demands a lot of sensibility. One cannot produce a work of art, much less a masterpiece, without inspiration. In western and eastern Mythology, the act of Creation is a prerogative of the gods, who are very jealous to concede this divine power to the mortals. The essential beauty of classical Mythology revolves exactly around the eternal saga of Prometheus and the quest for the secret of Creation. Horse breeding is not an exception and we do have to pay a very high price to succeed.
For those reasons, only a handful of really top genealogies exist in any animal breed, developed and preserved by well established breeders, who have, through many years of breeding, either been capable of successfully doing this job or lucky enough to have obtained horses and mares that turned them into continuators of an older genealogy in its purest form. If you understand the meaning of all this, then you will also perceive the difference between Interagro horses and most other present-day Lusitano breeds.
In the following pages you will find a didactic material which will help you identify and make yourself acquainted with the very best and most traditional genealogies in the Lusitano breed, as well as a brief biographic note about each of their founding horses and mares. We hope this material illustrates what has been written above and makes you as enchanted as we and our thousands of clients and friends have been with these fabulous horses. But before going further into this exploration, it is important to define exactly what we are talking about, answering the following question:
