Video: Ride the Trot Lengthening

Pan-Am dressage medalist Kate Poulin-Neff shows you how to strengthen and supple your horse and maximize his performance in this First-Level movement, the trot lengthening.

If you're like many First Level dressage riders, trot lengthenings may seem to be a matter of talent--some horses lengthen more naturally and easily than others--or luck, as in the "unlucky" break to canter. But if you've done your homework, trot lengthenings are excellent opportunities to strengthen and supple your horse, show off your training and impress judges. With the right basics and preparation, you can make every lengthening a good one--on any horse!

In this video, I'll show you how I prepare for the lengthening in the corner and then ask my horse for the movement across the diagonal.

To learn step-by-step how to ride the trot lengthening, see "Ride the Trot Lengthening" in the July 2008 issue of Practical Horseman magazine.
