August 3, 2005 — Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Horse and Man will make its East Coast debut on September 7 in Boston, Mass., when the equestrian show opens at Suffolk Downs.

Cavalia spent 2004 and early 2005 in the western United States. Following a spring visit to Toronto, Cavalia began playing in Montreal. Cavalia will log its 450th performance on August 6, while still in its home town of Montreal, before moving on to Boston.

Created by Normand Latourelle, one of the founders of Quebec’s famed Cirque du Soleil, and directed by Érick Villeneuve, Cavalia is a grand-scale spectacle involving acrobatics, music, projected images and equestrians. Cavalia’s equine cast of 50 horses includes Lusitanos, Quarter Horses, Paint Horses, Canadian horses, Percherons, Arabians and more.

The show features acclaimed European “horse whisperer” Frédéric Pignon and his wife, world-class rider Magali Delgado, who bring an approach to horses marked by kindness and respect. The show takes place under North America’s largest touring tent–a white, 26,264-sq. ft. big top rising some 100 feet high.

Normand Latourelle, president and artistic director of Cavalia, is the visionary behind the show. After participating in the development of Cirque du Soleil, he was one of the company’s three owners from 1985 until 1990.
