Lasko Products Issues Box-Fan Recall

Check the fan in your horse's stall: Lasko Products has recalled 5.6 million fans because an electrical fault in the fan motor can cause the units to catch fire.

May 19, 2006 — If you bungee a box fan to your horse’s stall grill to keep cool breezes flowing in hot weather, take a minute right now to check the fan’s make and model number. A major manufacturer, Lasko Products, Inc., of West Chester, Pa., has recalled some 5.6 million fans. The reason: An electrical fault in the fan motor can cause the units to catch fire. Lasko has received 42 reports of such fires, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Division.

The recall covers box and other fan styles sold from 1999 through February 2004 under various brand names at discount department stores, home-improvement centers and other retailers nationwide. Lasko has a full listing and pictures of affected models on the company website, www.laskoproducts.com. Box-fan models include Lasko 3723, 3733, 3700 and 3750; Galaxy 3733; and General Electric 106620.

Only fans made between January 1999 and July 2001 are affected, so look for a date stamp on the bottom of the fan. The Lasko website or automated recall line (1-800-984-3311) will walk you through the identification process. If you have one of the recalled fans, stop using it immediately.

Because the fans were all sold more than two years ago, they are no longer under warranty. So instead of a replacement fan, the company will provide a free adapter that connects to the fan plug. It cuts off current to the fan if a fuse in the plug detects an electrical fault.
