There’s no question 2011 was the year of the helmet, starting with a Helmet Awareness confab in Wellington that attracted big names in a variety of disciplines and ending with passage of a mandatory helmet rule by the FEI. Enforcement has been put off until 2013 to allow for educating vaulters and reiners, who do not have a protective headgear “culture”.
It also was the year of improving footing. Several major facilities upgraded their surfaces, while the Devon Horse Show announced it is joining forces with Dressage at Devon to raise money for new footing in the warm-up area that will match the quality of the showgrounds’ rings.
Dressage at Devon freestyle winner Adrienne Lyle wore a helmet in the rain on Wizard and made herself a contender for the 2012 Olympics.
