For those with a devotion to their goals, here is where you will find a facility that is devoted to your needs and the needs of your horse. Our facility is more than a showcase, but a place where horse and rider come together as one competitor with access to the kind of training necessary to win. Riding for pleasure may be a passing interest for some students, and we firmly believe and encourage participation in equestrian activities because it is rewarding at any level. But for those students with a passion and desire to compete in USEF shows, our equestrian program is peerless.

Beyond its ability to promote self-confidence, teamwork and discipline, AOA is unmatched in our dedication to equestrian sports. That pledge became the vision for a program where riders from preparatory schools could experience collegiate-like competition. That’s why we developed the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA). The IEA is the only high school equestrian association that is an affiliate of the IHSA. At Andrews Osborne Academy, we’re serious about our riding.

Johnson & Wales University offers two equine degrees, Equine Business Management / Riding and Equine Business Management with many options for specialization within the degrees.

The Equine Business Management / Riding degree program combines riding instruction, specialized academic equine courses and equine labs with business and general studies courses. The riding major offers some unique opportunities for students to specialize by participating in an Instructor / Trainer concentration and/or for advanced riders to ride at The German Riding School in Warendorf and the Muenster Riding School in Muenster, Germany.

Equine Business Management / Riding students participate in nine riding classes focusing on dressage and jumping. Each course is individually tailored to the students’ competencies so that maximum advancement is obtained by each student. A unique feature of the riding program is the use of Eckart Meyner's warm-up routine and exercises to unblock the rider and achieve harmony with the horse. Student riding outcomes are measured through performance transcript and certificate programs which validate the rider’s progress at three levels of dressage and three levels of jumping.

Equine Academics - both majors
Specialized science based equine classes develop the understanding of the function of the horse with study in anatomy, lameness, physiology, sports therapy, genetics, nutrition, diseases and reproduction. Further classes develop the ability to evaluate horses for sport, develop a farm management plan, manage horse shows and understand the foundations of riding theory. Through these equine academic courses graduates are expected to demonstrate competencies in formulating equine dietary rations, designing a herd health program, selecting sport horses, and developing an equine business plan.

Labs Both equine degree programs offer three specialized Equine Management Labs which emphasize the hands-on aspects of horse management including: daily care, presentation of the horse in hand, first aid, lungeing, long lining and other applied skills. As an outcome of the practicum classes the student upon graduation has the skills needed to obtain a position in the farm management sector of the horse industry.

Internships and Term Abroad Many students select to participate in the internship program which allows students to work in the equine industry at approved establishments. Students interested in the breeding industry have participated in the Kentucky Equine Management Internship program at selected breeding farms in the Lexington, KY area. Students that select to participate in the internship option often transition from school to work in one easy step.

Options are also available for foreign travel through the term abroad program which has recently sent students to Warendorf, Germany, the heart of the German equestrian world. Students may also participate in a summer term in England to complete their Arts and Science electives.

Careers A sampling of the positions that students have filled upon graduation include: assistant riding instructor and trainer, farm manager, facility owner, equine advertising account manager, sales representative, retail manager, insurance agent, horse show personnel, horse/ breed association publicist and veterinary assistant.

Located on a 90,000 acre ranch in Southwest Montana, La Cense Montana Professional School of Horsemanship offers students a natural horsemanship experience like no other in the world. In addition to earning nearly 2,000 hours for practical equine experience per year, students also college credit by taking equine and professional courses at the University of Montana Western.

The 1+1 Program allows students to choose between a one year program or a two year program for qualified students. Students learn step-by step methods to a refined, sound riding and training foundation and work with one to four horses at any time.

The La Cense Professional School of Horsemanship graduates professional horsemen who will provide safe and competent coaching to help riders achieve their personal goals with their horse’s and to educate their horses. Eachstudent will learn also to prepare exceptional horses utilizing techniques described in the American Quarter Horse Association’s Fundamentals of Horsemanship and the La Cense Balance. The La Cense Balance teaches you how to use natural horsemanship as a tool in the day to day preparation of horses and their riders. It is dedicated to educating both horses and humans in the best principles of horsemanship, bridging the gap between natural and conventional training.

Located at one of the nation's most prestigious liberal arts colleges, the riding program at Mount Holyoke College offers competitive athletics and competitive academics. Mount Holyoke's scholar-athletes are inspired to excel as riders, as well as in the classroom and laboratory. They have access to nationally ranked teams and utilize some of the finest equestrian facilities in the United States.

Hunter Seat Equitation Team:

A commitment to excellence has helped the Mount Holyoke equestrian team earn a national reputation. Consistently ranked among the top teams within the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), Mount Holyoke has won:

• Three IHSA National Championships (2006, 2000, 1986)
• IHSA Reserve National Championship (2007)
• Four Tournament of Champions titles (2007, 2002, 2007, 1993)
• Mid-South Classic Championship (1995)

Dressage Team:
The Mount Holyoke dressage club team has dominated Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) competition for more than a decade. Undefeated regionally since 1997, the team was named IDA National Champions in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2008. Mount Holyoke hosted the IDA National Championships in 2008. Other honors include:

• 2005 IDA RESERVE National Champions

Western Riding Team:

Mount Holyoke is the only small, liberal arts college in its region to host an active IHSA Western riding team. Like dressage, the western team is a club sport that gives students unique leadership opportunities as well as a competitive western riding experience. The team was founded in 2008 and is quickly growing into a force to be reckoned with in their region.   Mount Holyoke has many opportunities for students to ride even if they are not interested in a competitive experience. Students are welcome to bring their horses to campus and use the resources of the equestrian center. The College also maintains a group of exceptional horses for use in riding classes.

The University of Findlay's Equestrian Studies Programs are designed to provide students with the experience and knowledge for a successful career and a quality of instruction that is unequaled at the collegiate level. Our 12 riding staff members serve as professional judges, trainers, exhibitors and breeders, offering a current, and realistic, perspective of the equine industry and are instrumental in job placement.

Students may pursue an associate's or bachelor's degree in English or western riding, as well as a bachelor's in equine business management. The University of Findlay also offers the opportunity to combine an equestrian studies degree with a second major of choice. This can also increase marketability upon graduation and provide the competitive edge necessary for success.

UF's English Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) team has become one of the top equestrian teams in the country, capturing the 2001 IHSA National Championship and following it up with five Reserve titles. Since 2004, The University of Findlay's Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) team has qualified for the IDA Nationals both as a team and with individuals, winning regionals four times.
