May 26, 2013 -- Clear rounds were at a premium Sunday at the Saumur CCI3* as 34 combinations went forward into the show jumping. Only three competitors, including winner Bill Levett, were able to produce faultless trips over Pierre Michelet's demanding track. The U.S. entries of Will Faudree, Marilyn Little and Hannah Sue Burnett each incurred eight faults over the course, as all three Land Rover Competition Grant recipients dislodged two rails.

Will Faudree and Andromaque

© 2013 Shannon Brinkman

Faudree (Hoffman, N.C.) and Jennifer Mosing's Andromaque entered the final phase in fourth place following a spectacular trip around the cross country on Saturday. In the show jumping, the 12-year-old Irish Thoroughbred mare faulted at fences six and 10A to move down one place. The talented pair finished in fifth on a score of 55.8.

"She tried very hard and looked great this morning. She's naturally a very careful horse, so I'm not too concerned about it in the future," said the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games veteran of Andromaque's performance on Sunday. "I just need to apply what I learned this weekend going forward."

Faudree also realizes the importance of competing in Europe and facing different challenges as the U.S. prepares for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games next year in Normandy.

"The rails are quite light and spindly over here; you can't even breathe on them. We need to be prepared for that in the future."

The 2012 USEF National CCI3* Eventing Reserve Champions lowered the heights of fences eight and 11 to finish on a total of 60.

First to jump for the U.S. on Sunday were Burnett (The Plains, Va.) and Jacqueline Mars' 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Harbour Pilot. The 2011 Pan American Games Team Gold and Individual Silver medalists finished in 26th place on a score of 91.4 after rolling poles at the second and eighth fences.

Buck Davidson (Ocala, Fla.) and Sherrie Martin's The Apprentice were also competing at the Saumur CCI3* on a Land Rover Competition Grant but were eliminated on Saturday's cross country for not properly jumping fence 18B before continuing on course.

Australia's Levett claimed victory at the prestigious French competition finishing on his dressage of 42.6 with Shannondale Titan.

October 21, 2012 -- Autumn at its best, on Saturday and today, offered the perfect setting for sporting drama at the Dansko Fair Hill International, where the backdrop of gorgeous foliage set the stage for fabulous eventing. We won't talk about Friday, when the rain didn't improve the dressage conditions and caused worries about what the footing would be like on cross-country.

But an hour's delay in the start yesterday helped dry the ground, which provided less in the way of surface problems than one might have thought. New fences on the cross-country really made things interesting. Most eyecatching was the Keyhole, with horses jumping through a picture frame obstacle, and one of the most interesting was the following fence, the Open Corners, so narrow that nearly everyone knocked over a flag there.

Happily, there were no major accidents. Only one horse fell, Jessica Phoenix's Erodium in the 2-star, and just one rider, Will Faudree, took a tumble. He went off of DHI Colour Candy at the first water in the 3-star, getting quite a dunking, and did not start on his second mount, Pawlow.

The hills at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area always make cross-country more of a test than is obvious by just looking at the fences, but the show jumping layouts by Sally Ike also played a big role in the outcome of the 2-star fall national championship.

Connor Husain, winner of the 2-star, on Piece of Hope

© 2012 by Nancy Jaffer

I met Connor Husain, a 19-year-old sophomore at George Mason University in Virginia, at the Jersey Fresh 3-star last spring. He is quite impressive, both in demeanor and athletic ability, and it was obvious to me that he would go on to great things. But although he won gold at the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships during the summer, neither he nor I thought he would wind up winning his 2-star division here on the Swedish bred Piece of Hope.

Tied for fifth after dressage with Jennie Brannigan on Indie, he moved up to second with 0.8 time penalties on cross-country, while she rose to first place with one of only four double-clear rounds over the route laid out by Derek di Grazia, who also designs the cross-country at the Rolex Kentucky 4-star.

Never betraying the pressure he faced in the huge show jumping arena, Connor turned in a neat trip that did the job and put him in the position to claim the trophy if Jennie faltered, which she did. Indie dropped a rail at the fourth fence on the course. That attractive Dutchbred was one of only two horses in the top 10 to have jumping faults, but Jennie hadn't been counting on a clear go, since he's still rather inexperienced. So as that rail fell, Connor became the winner.

It felt "so surreal," he said.

"It's just amazing to have everything come together for one weekend," he noted, after finishing with a respectable 44.7 penalties.

We had chatted following the cross-country, and you can tell from the conversation that to him, just riding at Fair Hill for the first time and being competitive would have been enough.

Listen: Connor Husain

Connor always wears a pink ribbon on the lapel of his jacket because his mother, Leslie, is a breast cancer survivor. Leslie and his whole family were there to watch Connor, who is not only their star, but could be on the brink of becoming a star for his country, too.

Clayton Fredericks, who rides for Australia, rode Pigrela Des Cabanes to second place in the 2-star

© 2012 by Nancy Jaffer

Let's look at the people in the standings behind Connor in the extremely strong 2-star division. Second went to Olympic medalist Clayton Fredericks of Australia, who has just moved to the U.S.; like 10 days ago. He rode Pigrela Des Cabanes (46.4), whose owner hopes to compete the horse for her native South Africa in the 2014 World Equestrian Games. Jennie was third (47.9), Doug Payne fourth on the up-and-coming Crown Talisman (48.9) and two-time Fair Hill winner Boyd Martin, of whom you may have heard, was fifth with Master Frisky (49.7).

Another young gun, 26-year-old Hannah Sue Burnett, led from start to finish on her dressage score of 43 penalties in the 3-star with Harbour Pilot. Hannah has found her perfect niche at Fair Hill; she won the 2-star and 3-star here with St. Barths in 2009 and 2010. Last year, she earned team gold and individual silver in the Pan Am Games with Harbour Pilot, who was homebred by owner Jacqueline Mars.

"William," as he is known, is out of Shannon, a mare campaigned by Karen O'Connor. William got his early training from Karen's husband, David, who said the horse was very difficult (he liked to rear in his younger days). David trains Hannah at home in Virginia, and he'll likely be training her in his new role as U.S. eventing coach, too.

Marilyn Little aboard RF Smoke on the Water, second in the 3-star, at one of the new cross-country fences, the Keyhole

© 2012 by Nancy Jaffer

Marilyn Little, whose first international eventing outing was here a year ago, finished second with the gorgeous gray RF Smoke on the Water (love that perfect name), who had 52.4 penalties (Hannah could have had several rails down and still won) and fourth on RF Demeter (56.6).

It hasn't been an easy year for Marilyn. She came close but missed out on the Olympic team. She's getting a divorce, and on the morning of show jumping, Smoke was held at the final horse inspection and prodded by the veterinarian, as Marilyn waited for another chance to trot him in front of the ground jury. She got it and they gave her the nod, but she told me she hadn't planned on such an eventful morning.

Marilyn, who had a rail with Smoke, was the only one of the top six to score any penalties in the show jumping, but she had room to spare in order to keep the number 2 placing she earned in dressage.

Phillip Dutton was third in the 3-star with the very experienced Fernhill Eagle (53.2). He said he has a "love/hate relationship" with Eagle who is "a little bit of a cranky horse," but noted, "he's pretty proud of himself today."

I caught up with David to talk about the prospects for America to regain its international standing after a disappointing (that's an understatement) Olympics. With well-mounted riders such as Connor, Hannah and Marilyn, ready to be honed for international stardom, perhaps his new job won't be as tough as some think. First, I was interested in his impression of Connor Husain.

Listen: David O'Connor

Veering off the subject, I asked David how Karen is doing after an operation to insert a rod in her back. She broke two vertebrae in a fall recently, but he believes she'll be fine riding because the rod is high up and won't interfere with her ability to bend.

U.S. Equestrian Federation President David O’Connor and show jumping course designer Sally Ike present the national 3-star championship trophy and cooler to Hannah Sue Burnett on Harbour Pilot

© 2012 by Nancy Jaffer

Clayton, who has won Rolex Kentucky, is starting a business in Ocala, Fla. He has been based in England for years, where his wife, Lucinda, will keep a stable going. His achievement in the 2-star was quite something, considering the horse just got here and spent two days in quarantine. He also was supposed to ride another of his mounts, Walterstown Don, in the three-star, but the quarantine situation wasn't helpful and the horse tied up when he got him here. Rather than pushing and possibly regretting it, Clayton decided to let Don rest up. I think you'll be seeing him at Rolex Kentucky.

We talked about his move and his reaction to living in America, although that may have been a bit premature on my part.

Listen: Clayton Fredericks

With former Australians Boyd and Phillip now riding with the American flag on their saddlepads, I wondered if Clayton had thought about becoming a citizen too (they could have their own team of "former Australians.) But it doesn't appear likely.

"It's not anything I've really thought about...never say never, but I don't think so," Clayton said.

If you haven't been to Fair Hill, you really should come. It's relaxed, beautiful and the crab bisque (so Maryland!) isn't bad either. Just walking the cross-country course will give you a good workout, with all those hills. The former du Pont estate is nothing but scenic, a perfect setting for the final three-day of the season in the East.

I'm switching gears now, heading for the Washington International horse show. Look for my postcard next Sunday night.

Until then,

October 19, 2012 -- The second day of dressage at the Dansko Fair Hill International CCI got off to a late start on Friday after lightning storms caused an hour delay. Rain continued to threaten throughout the day and struck during the first rides of the final afternoon session as competitors completed the first phase the USEF National Two and Three-Star Eventing Championships. In the CCI3* Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot hold the lead going into the cross country with a score of 43. No one was able to catch Thursday's CCI2* leader Susan Beebee and Wolf as their score of 40.8 proved to be unassailable.

USEF National Three-Star Eventing Championship

Three-star competition got underway Friday with all 34 entries contesting their dressage tests in front of the Ground Jury of Angela Tucker, Janine Rohr and Wayne Quarles.

Burnett (The Plains, Va.) and Jacqueline Mars' Harbour Pilot were the first combination following the lunch break and presented a steady, rhythmic effort to hold the lead after the dressage. The classy nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding flowed easily through the three-star test demonstrating three lovely gaits.

"I was quite nervous, it's been a bumpy year trying to figure it out in all three phases. But he's such a showman. He's so rideable; he doesn't get tense or nervous. He knows what to do in the little white box," said Burnett. "It's very exciting for Miss Mars, who bred him and has known him his whole life, so that's cool."

The pair is no stranger to success having claimed Team Gold and Individual Silver medals at last year's Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Burnett will look to claim her second USEF National Three-Star Eventing Championship after having claimed the National Title in 2010 with St. Barths. The 26-year-old always looks forward to coming to Fair Hill, but is leading after the first phase for the first time.

"I'm really excited to be back here; I love this event. The course looks great," said Burnett. "I've never won the dressage here before; so that's exciting. I'm happy to be here on Harbour Pilot, he's a cool horse."

Cruising into second place in both the CCI3* and National Championship was Marilyn Little (Frederick, Md.) and RF Smoke on the Water. Raylyn Farms' seven-year-old Wurrtemberg gelding scored 44.8 for his accurate, forward effort.

"He's very brave and very confident. He's in his element tomorrow," said Little. "Today is my hardest phase. So I get to enjoy the rest of the weekend."

Lying third is Heather Gillette (Califon, N.J.) and Kathleen McDermott's 16-year-old New Zealand Thoroughbred Our Questionnaire with a score of 48.6.

USEF National Two-Star Eventing Championship

The second half of the CCI2* completed their dressage tests today but the 30 horse and rider combinations that went down centerline in front of the Ground Jury of Ulrich Schmitz and Gretchen Butts were unable to crack the top two placings. Beebee (Southern Pines, N.C.) and her nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding will set-out on tomorrow's cross country with the CCI2* and National Championship lead. Danielle Ditching (Roswell, Ga.) and The Graduate were able to maintain their second place standing. The 14-year-old Sachsen-Anhaltiner scored 41.4 on Thursday.

Doug Payne (Pottersville, N.J.) and his own and Amelia and Larry Ross' Crown Talisman slotted themselves into third place at the end of the day. The nine-year-old Thoroughbred/Holsteiner gelding scored 41.7.

September 8, 2012 -- The Merial Advanced division at the Nutrena USEA American Eventing Championships presented by Bit of Britain wrapped up today with the show jumping phase at Chattahoochee Hills. Mark Donovan's tough course had riders incurring numerous jump and time penalties with just five double clear rounds in the division. Becky Holder (Palmetto, Ga.) and Courageous Comet had one rail down but held onto their lead to win the Merial Advanced division held in conjunction with the USEF National Advanced Horse Trials Championship with a score of 27.7. Holder had a stellar weekend with her and husband Tom Holder's 16-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, taking top honors at this year's Championship as they did in 2010 Land Rover USEA American Eventing Championships.

It was a fitting way to end Courageous Comet's illustrious career as Holder confirmed this was his last upper-level competition. The crowd went wild as Holder and "Comet" crossed the finish line winning the Championship and bringing a very special partnership to a close.

"He (Comet) deserves this. I believe now and have believed for a long time he is the best in his sport," Holder said. "I appreciate the grooms, vets, trainers, selectors, USEF High Performance Committee, and everyone who has been part of shaping his career. Thanks to all the fans and to those at the Kentucky Horse Park, many of our most memorable moments were on that course and in that stadium."

The pair was able to finish on their dressage score of 32.4, the only pair to do so in the division, after having one of the few double clear stadium rounds of the day.

Hannah Sue Burnett (The Plains, Va.) rode her 2011 Pan American Games mount Harbour Pilot to a third place finish. She had a great weekend with Jacqueline Mars' nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding moving up from seventh after cross country with a double clear stadium round to take third place honors with their final score of 38.8.

October 20, 2011 -- The U.S. Eventing Team presented five horses at the First Horse Inspection of the 2011 Pan American Games and all were accepted without incident.

October 20, 2011 -- The U.S. Eventing Team presented five horses at the First Horse Inspection of the 2011 Pan American Games and all were accepted without incident. The United States drew fourth position, but of the three countries drawn ahead only Venezuela has a complete team; therefore American Buck Davidson and Absolute Liberty will be second in the ring in Friday's dressage.

All five horses looked sharp, and the Ground Jury of Wayne Quarles (USA), Janine Rohr (ARG) and Alain James (FRA) passed them as fit and ready to contest the CCI2* level competition. Under the care of Chef d'Equipe Capt. Mark Phillips, veterinarian Dr. Brendan Furlong and farrier Stephen Teichman, the U.S. Team presented a strong and fit looking group of horses.

Listen to what Dr. Furlong had to say about the squad: http://www.usefnetwork.com/blogs/170/dr_brendan_furlong_on_the_eventing.aspx

Of the five riders only Davidson (Ocala, Fla.) has ridden on a team before, and he will give the four rookies a lead in their first international championship. Davidson will ride Sharon Will's homebred Thoroughbred x Oldenburg mare Absolute Liberty - a CCI3* veteran - in the pathfinder position. Davidson finished sixth in the 1999 Pan American Games on Pajama Game and rode at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

Davidson's father, Bruce, won Individual Gold at the 1995 Pan American Games with Heyday.

Hannah Sue Burnett (The Plains, Va.) has had incredible success with Jacqueline Mars' homebred Harbour Pilot, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse. They were second in the CCI2* at Bromont in June and look to continue their recent form on their first trip to Mexico.

Lynn Symansky (Middleburg, Va.) rode at the 2003 Pan American Games as an Individual--she was 10th on No It Tissant--at the age of 20. She has produced Donner, an 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, herself and got a late call-up for the team when Jonathan Holling had to withdraw Downtown Harrison the day before the horses shipped to Mexico. Donner was the 2010 Land Rover American Eventing Champion at the Intermediate level.

"I think the best thing is not being the only new team member," said Symansky. "I love the dynamic. It is very cool to come and have everyone share that same experience with you. Everyone gets along really well and it's a very unique experience to have this many new members on a team. I've got some big shoes to fill coming here in place of Jon."

The riders got their first glimpse at the cross-country course at the Santa Sofia Country Club yesterday and were impressed with what they saw.

"I'm excited," said Symansky. "I thought it would be a bit softer, maybe not as long, not as challenging. But [course designer] John [Williams] has done a great job. I'm really excited to go out there, I think we all are. There are a lot of questions out there and there's enough terrain - you have to have a horse that is fit and ready to go."

Michael Pollard (Dalton, Ga.) has had a busy fall; he rode at both Burghley and Boekelo and brings a third grey horse, Schoensgreen Hanni, to his first championship. Owned by his wife, Nathalie, the 8-year-old German Sport Horse mare was second at the Mandatory Outing for the Pan American Games at the Richland Park CIC2* in August.

As the lone West Coast member of the team, Shannon Lilley (Gilroy, Calif.) and the Lilley Group's Ballingowan Pizazz will go last for the squad. They won the Mandatory Outing at

Richland Park, and the 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse has had considerable success across the country. Lilley serves as the chef d'equipe for the Area VI Young Riders Team and is enjoying her first experience on the other side of the equation.

"We have a great team, we all get along so well," said Lilley. "After all the years of doing Young Riders and knowing how different teams get along and not get along - we're so lucky. It's a real team as opposed to individuals on a team."

August 28, 2011 -- Shannon Lilley and Ballingowan Pizzaz jumped a dazzling clear round to win the Mandatory Outing for the 2011 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team at the Richland Park Horse Trials.

August 28, 2011 -- The Richland Park CIC and Horse Trials wrapped up with influential show jumping in all of the divisions on Sunday, but none more than in the USEF Mandatory Outing for the 2011 Land Rover USEF Eventing Team. The 14 short-listed horses tackled the Advanced show jumping track and proved a test of accuracy and scope. Leading off with a large triple bar, course designer Marc Donavon asked for forward riding from the beginning. When the last fence was jumped, the top three spots of the exciting group of young horses and up-and-coming riders were filled by horses that show jumped clear.

Shannon Lilley and Ballingowan Pizzaz

StockImageServices.com

The classiest effort of the division belonged the eventual winner: Shannon Lilley rode Ballingowan Pizzaz confidently around the course and the 9-year-old chestnut gelding jumped a dazzling clear round.

"He's a very good show jumper and he always has been," said Lilley. "He usually warms up well but then he goes in the ring and is that much better. He was stronger today in the show jumping than he's been so I felt like I had to do a few more half halts to get him to jump clean - but he does jump well."

Owned by The Lilley Group, Ballingowan Pizzaz jumped to the top spot after the winners of the dressage and the overnight leader after the cross country, Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot, rolled two rails to drop to fourth. Lilley and Ballingowan Pizzaz finished on their dressage score of 47.10, making their trip from Gilroy, Calif., worth every mile.

"The weekend was phenomenal," said Lilley. "The organizers did a great job to make this well worth the trip. The courses were fantastic. Ian (Stark) designs a great course and the course builders did a great job as always."

She has had the Pan American Games as a goal since she bought Ballingowan Pizzaz last fall. Lilley imported him for a client when he was a 5-year-old. He then was sold to another client, who then decided to go to veterinary school. Lilley was determined to keep the horse in the barn and put the Lilley Group together to do so.

"I knew I had to figure out a way to keep him," said Lilley. "When I bought him, to help with getting (the syndicate) put together, I did cite the Pan Ams as a goal. I work with Dayna Lynde-Pugh and we planned that if this hadn't worked out the fall CCI3* at Galway would be the plan. He has a really good base at the CCI2* level so I felt like the move up to the advanced would be pretty seamless."

Michael Pollard and his wife Nathalie's Schoensgreen Hanni also jumped an immaculate clear round to move from fifth to second. The 8-year-old mare galloped and jumped her way up the leaderboard to add just 8/10ths of a time fault on the cross country to her dressage score of 49.1. Nathalie rode the Dutch mare herself at the beginning of her career but is currently pregnant with the couple's fourth child.

Pollard left quickly after he jumped his Intermediate horse to fly to England to ride Icarus at the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials which begin on Wednesday. Pollard will be contesting the prestigious CCI4* for the first time, he was a recipient of a Land Rover Competition and Training Grant.

Lynn Symansky and Donner improved throughout the weekend and ended up on their dressage score of 50.50. An 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Donner won the 2010 Intermediate American Eventing Championship last fall and has continued to progress confidently.

Six of the horses jumped clear out of the 14 starters, after they jumped the Advanced cross country course on Saturday, and performed the CIC2* dressage test on Thursday.

The 2011 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team for the Pan American Games is expected to be named Tuesday after tomorrow's veterinary evaluations. The Pan American Games will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico October 14-30.
August 27, 2011 -- Hannah Sue Burnett successfully defended her lead in the cross country phase of the mandatory outing for the 2011 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team at the Richland Park Horse Trials.

August 27, 2011 -- Hannah Sue Burnett and Harbour Pilot never flinched in the face of the pressure of leading the Mandatory Outing for the 2011 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team at the Richland Park CIC and Horse Trials. They added nothing to their dressage score on the cross country and successfully defended their lead.

"It was one of my best rounds ever, on any horse," said Burnett. "I built on my speed as I went, I didn't have the intention to run him really hard but it was at intermediate speed. I just picked up a good rhythm at the first fence and I built on it. All of the combinations rode like gymnastics. I picked up the speed at the last two fences."

Harbour Pilot, an 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse and homebred of Jacqueline Mars, continues to live up to the expectation of all that have been involved in his career. Part of David and Karen O'Connor's program since he was a born, he has been ridden by Burnett since last spring. Burnett serves as an assistant trainer in their program, and she rode Harbour Pilot to a second-place finish in the CCI2* at the Bromont CCI in June. Their performance earned them one of 15 spots on the USEF Short List for the Land Rover Eventing Team for the 2011 Pan American Games.

"He's really grown up," said Burnett. "After Bromont, he thought he was Superman. This is actually his first run since Bromont. He's so good on the cross country so he doesn't have to run a lot. I am so happy for Ms. Mars and the O'Connors as they produced him, it is nice that they can produce something of his quality."

Fourteen of the 15 horses are contesting the Mandatory Outing (Boyd Martin and Cold Harbor were excused from the competition as Martin prepares for next week's CCI4* at Burghley Horse Trials) and 13 of the starters jumped clear rounds. Four horses made the time, but Shannon Lilley and The Lilley Group's Ballingowan Pizzaz picked up .4 of a penalty for being one second slow. Lilley and the 9-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding head into Sunday's show jumping on 47.1, less than a point in front of fellow Californian Tamra Smith. Smith and Leigh Mesher's Mar de Amor sit third on their dressage mark of 47.8.

The Mandatory Outing was run over the Advanced cross country course, and for many of these horses the track included some of the toughest questions they have faced. Designed by Ian Stark, it required forward riding all the way around, and the much discussed bounce into the first water at fence seven rode better than many anticipated. Only Smith and Mar de Amor elected to take the option.

One rail separates the top four horses, so there will be plenty of pressure tomorrow, not only to determine the winner, but also to help the USEF Selectors determine who is most suitable to ride on the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team in Guadalajara.

Buck Davidson is leading the CIC 3* on Carl and Cassandra Segal's 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games veteran, BallyNoe Castle RM, after a rock-solid round - one second under the optimum time. He is on the same score as Jennie Brannigan and Nina Gardner's Cambalda, who flew around the cross country, to finish faster, but further from the optimum time which is how the tie is broken. Phillip Dutton lies third and fourth on Ben and William Penn, respectively.

August 25th, 2011 -- When Hannah Sue Burnett rode Harbour Pilot into the dressage ring as the first of the 14 riders contesting the USEF Pan American Games Mandatory Outing for the 2011 Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team she set a mark that couldn't be beat. The Mandatory Outing is being held as part of the Richland Park Horse Trials and CIC3*.

Riding Jacqueline Mars' 8-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, Burnett put in what is now becoming trademark for the 25 year old ride: a very polished effort. Burnett and Harbour Pilot scored 44.6 to leave them two points clear of Kristin Schmolze and Ballylaffin Bracken, whom she owns with her parents Bill and Janet. Shannon Lilly lies 1/10th of a point behind Schmolze on The Lilley Group's Ballygowan Pizzaz.

"It was one of his best tests," said Burnett. "It could have had a little more flash - if I had to be picky. But his trot work was good and I think his canter work was great. The turn on the haunches was good, which I was pleased about because I struggle with that."

Burnett was sixth at the 2011 Rolex Kentucky CCI4* presented by Bridgestone and was then second with Harbour Pilot in the CCI2* at Bromont in June. 'William' has been extremely competitive as he has risen through the levels; Burnett has ridden him since April of 2010.

"He was great - after a pretty hectic warm-up," said Burnett. "They were running ahead when I got up there... and there was a scratch in front of me, so I got a bit tense and 'William' got tense but David (O'Connor) was there and he helped me through it."

An assistant trainer for Karen and David O'Connor, Burnett is building up a string of horses and owners as she evolves into a professional.
