When you travel in many parts of the world, it’s striking how many horses, mules and donkeys you’ll see toiling in the same traditional jobs that have existed for centuries: pulling plows, tending herds, hauling produce to markets and in many cases providing the only transportation their owners have. Most are working side by side with people in impoverished conditions.

If you love horses, as I have since I was a small child, scenes like these fill you with a mixture of emotions. It is gratifying to see how much people care about the horses, donkeys and mules they rely on so heavily. Losing an animal to injury is a significant setback; it can mean the difference between earning enough to live on, or not, and even a one-day lay-up for an animal could mean a catastrophic loss of income. And yet it also stings to notice animals with open sores, swollen joints or overgrown, cracking hooves who must continue to toil so that their owners can survive.

I first witnessed scenes like these as a 6-year-old, when my father worked at the American embassy in Madrid and we traveled through rural regions of Spain. As I grew older we spent more years abroad in places like Thailand and the Philippines. The cross-cultural experiences there brought more glimpses of the plight of people, and their animals, living in severe poverty.

As a high school student in the Philippines, I participated in community service projects in remote areas, one of which delivered medical care to indigenous people. After watching human surgery in a cinderblock schoolhouse with no roof, I knew I could stomach surgery on animals and become a veterinarian.

These experiences also nurtured a dream I’d had since those early years in Spain. Just as groups like Doctors Without Borders organize doctors and nurses to hold health clinics in underserved areas, I wanted to bring veterinarians to similar clinics to aid hard-working animals in places like these. These clinics would not just address the horses’ and donkeys’ immediate needs, they would also teach owners better techniques for ongoing care and nutrition. Not only would the animals’ daily lives get better, but they’d be able to work longer and more efficiently, which would improve the people’s lives as well.

But it takes an overwhelming amount of time, organization and commitment to bring about programs like these. I continued to nurture the thought as I went to school. Once I’d received my veterinary degree and specialty training in internal medicine, I was fortunate to be invited to lecture in many countries. The travel reinforced my interest in providing equine education and health care internationally. Wherever I went in Asia, Africa or Latin America, I saw horses, donkeys, mules and people in need.

Finally, a few years ago, after years of looking for a viable way forward to act on my dream, I found a large group of like-minded veterinarians, and together we created Equitarian Initiative. This nonprofit group trains veterinarians to provide health services and owner education in very poor areas, and in 2010 we launched our first successful workshop, where we treated more than 800 animals in Veracruz, Mexico. Here’s how it came about.

From idea to reality
My dream of building an organization like Equitarian Initiative finally began to take root in 2007, during the annual convention of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), when Joe Bertone, DVM, DACVIM, of Western University of Health Sciences organized an informal meeting of veterinarians who had worked with international nonprofit organizations. We talked about our experiences and discussed the challenges of providing sustainable help to these very deserving horses, donkeys and mules. We all shared the goal of creating a new vehicle for action.

We had people present who could describe their work with several groups worthy of emulation:
• The Mongolia V.E.T. Net, a non-governmental organization that grew out of the Christian Veterinary Mission’s work to educate equine veterinarians in Mongolia.
• Project Samana, a group sponsored by the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association that cares for large and small animals and provides ongoing owner education in the Dominican Republic.
• Heifer International, a leading charity that provides livestock and education to impoverished families around the world to help them improve their nutrition and generate a sustainable income. I served on the board of directors for this group, and I also shared experiences from my teaching efforts in Latin America.

All of these groups are doing transformative work, but the need for more help is still so great in so many places around the globe. We all wanted to do more. Jay Merriam, DVM, of Project Samana coined the word “equitarian” to define the spirit of veterinarians and others interested in humanitarian work that benefits working equines: An equitarian is one who serves horses, donkeys and mules with compassion and whose only reward is their improved health and welfare.

Our next step was to catch the interest of the AAEP leadership and other members. At the 2008 AAEP convention, Merriam and I led ourfirst Table Topic on equitarian work. To our delight, it was standing room only, and a follow-up half-day program at the 2009 AAEP convention drew another large audience. Clearly, many North American veterinarians were interested in this kind of work, and more than a few were eager to find a way to get started.

So we had plenty of volunteers lining up. Now what? One of the speakers at the 2009 meeting was Mariano Hernandez Gil, DVM, an amazing young Mexican veterinarian who spoke about a program caring for the equines who haul garbage and recycling at the huge dump in Mexico City. This program partners students from the veterinary college in Mexico City (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, UNAM) with support from The Donkey Sanctuary (DS), a British charity, to provide much needed health care and owner education. The veterinary students gain valuable skills, both in social service and in hands-on training with the animals.

At the time of his presentation, Hernandez Gil was expanding that outreach program to serve poor villages in the state of Veracruz on the Gulf Coast of Mexico. UNAM’s agricultural research station has dormitories there and routinely houses students from the veterinary college. Mobile teams of veterinary students and faculty members come to each participating village for one day of work every six months.

To be effective, the program requires cooperation with the village leaders, who are responsible for encouraging the local animal owners to participate and letting them know when and where the veterinary team would be working. The DS/UNAM team also works in conjunction with a second British charity, World Horse Welfare, which trains local people to become farriers and harness makers, to provide these services to the animals at each village.

As he concluded his talk, Hernandez Gil offered a brilliant suggestion: Perhaps interested American veterinarians could spend a week with his program in Veracruz. The experience could serve as a training ground for starting other international programs. This was a terrific opportunity, and we immediately began investigating how we could make it happen.

Now we just had to raise funds. We put together a grant proposal to the AAEP Foundation to help subsidize the cost of ground transportation in Mexico. We were incredibly excited when we learned we had gotten the funding. More help came from the Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association, which offered to provide five travel stipends for recently graduated veterinarians. We then had just a few short months to spread the news to veterinarians about the opportunity, coordinate volunteers and organize the trip.

Then we kept our fingers crossed that this area of Mexico would remain safe and that we would attract the number of veterinarians we needed to make the trip worthwhile.

Hands-on help
Finally, everything came together, and in October of 2010, 27 equine veterinarians from the United States and Canada arrived in Veracruz, Mexico, for the first Equitarian workshop. There, we joined a team of Mexican veterinarians, veterinary students, farriers, harness makers and social workers to learn about both structuring community assistance projects and delivering basic equine health care in rural villages.

Each day began with classroom discussions to learn how to provide veterinary care effectively under field conditions. Once in each village, we’d have to practice a fast and targeted form of veterinary care, with no x-rays, no blood tests, no running water and no chance for follow-up visits anytime soon. We also had some discussions on cultural sensitivity: Understandably, many of the owners could be persuaded to spend time and money on ongoing care only if the treatments would increase the animal’s utility.

After class, we piled into vans and continued the discussions on the way to that day’s clinic. We would visit four villages in four days, and each location was in a different ecological and agricultural zone, ranging from the coastal plain to mountainous coffee farms. Each region presented unique medical challenges, and the animals’ work ranged from hauling coffee beans or milk cans to herding cattle.

When we arrived at our first clinic, my colleagues and I were dumbstruck at the huge number of animals assembled. Already villagers and local farmers had lined up with more than 100 donkeys, mules and horses, and others were still coming.

The veterinary students, who had arrived before us, had set up eight different aid stations on the village soccer field. One station served as an intake site, where each animal was briefly assessed to determine his needs, and the owner was given a list of the other stations he needed to visit to receive appropriate care. The services provided included: surgery, lameness care, farriery, harness fitting and repair, internal medicine/reproduction, parasitology/nutrition and dentistry. A horse trailer served as the supply center/pharmacy.

After the initial chaos as we got started, the clinic settled into a pattern of steady work. Many of the animals needed dental work and hoof trimming. Too many were thin and had saddle sores. Some were absolutely loaded with ticks.

I was the lead veterinarian for the internal medicine station along with my Mexican friend, Maria Masri, DVM, PhD. At our station, we saw dozens of cases each day, with a wide range of medical issues, including vampire bat bites, pasture-associated heaves, sand midge skin disease, bursitis due to parasitic infections, sarcoids, moon blindness and weight loss due to poor nutrition, poor dentition and parasites. The surgery station performed castrations, hernia repairs, wound debridements, sarcoid removals and more. All of our participants rotated among stations, spending half a day at each over the four days.

All in all, the workshop was a rousing success. Over the four days, we saw a total of 835 animals. What’s more, we’d all learned a lot, and we were buzzing with ideas on how to improve the process in the future.

A number of the Equitarian workshop participants began thinking about planning projects in other areas with horses, donkeys or mules in need. Could local contacts, community support and funding for travel and supplies be identified? Were veterinarians and horsemen in other areas interested in both education and improving the health care of the working animals?

Looking forward
Additional positive results of our workshop came quickly. Two veterinarians, Adrienne Otto, DVM, from Sullivans Island, South Carolina, and Mario Lopez, DVM, from Toronto, Ontario, successfully began a second project in an area of Costa Rica that Otto was familiar with.

One participant, Angela Gebhart, had been an undergraduate at the time of the workshop, and when she returned home, she inspired her faculty and classmates at South Dakota State University to begin similar projects on the Native American reservations in the Dakotas. Following through on one of our suggestions for improvement---to better engage all of the curious children who inevitably gathered to watch us---Gebhart created a donkey and horse health coloring book in Spanish with the help of her local 4-H group. Then she persuaded her former Girl Scout troop to both bind the coloring books and donate crayons for the planned 2011 Equitarian workshop.

Elated by the workshop’s success and continuing impact, Merriam and I reported back to our pleased AAEP supporters. We applied to the AAEP Foundation for funding to hold a second workshop in Veracruz. This time, however, we offered to become an independent nonprofit organization that would handle registration and all the logistics for our work. The leadership of the AAEP and AAEP Foundation concurred and again generously provided a grant.

And so Equitarian Initiative was born as a nonprofit organization in October 2011. The second workshop in Veracruz went even better. This time, more than 80 veterinarians, students and educators made the trip, and more than 1,000 animals were treated. Since then, a second successful trip to Costa Rica was completed as well as a new project for cart horses in Honduras. We recently completed our third workshop, this time in Santa Cruz, Tlaxcala, Mexico, and we’ve begun planning new projects in Guatemala and South Africa.

Our dream to find a way for American veterinarians to learn how to provide education and service to the very needy working equines in the world is coming true. Together we’re creating a network of veterinarians with a common goal and spirit of sharing experiences with others that will only grow in the years to come.

Sad tales of neglected and abandoned horses seem to be everywhere---in the news, on Facebook, on flyers at your local feed store. Photos of thin horses with drooping ears and dull eyes tug at your heartstrings. You want to help, but it can be hard to know what to do.

I’ve been involved in the effort to help horses in need for more than 14 years, and I am currently executive director of Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society in College Station, Texas. When I started out, few equine rescues existed in the United States, but today there are hundreds across the country. Most are run by good people doing necessary work, but the rapid growth of the rescue industry has far outpaced regulations to govern operations, and we don’t yet have a formal trade association to provide direction and guidelines.

As a result, every so often reports appear about neglected horses discovered at “rescues” run by animal hoarders or by well-intentioned people who found themselves in over their heads. Even worse are the “rescuers” who are simply defrauding their donors. Although these people are the exceptions, their actions give rise to many misconceptions about equine rescues that may stop people from volunteering, donating money or even adopting a horse in need. Because good rescues provide vital services to their communities and the horse industry, it is time to debunk the most common myths and understand the truths behind them.

Myth #1: All rescues are the same
Reality: Each rescue is a unique organization with its own policies and procedures, fundraisers and management staff.

I hear this myth more than any other: When I ask for a donation, someone will tell me they already gave to us---at a fundraiser for a different rescue, or someone who wants to adopt a horse will tell us they have already been approved because they applied at a different organization. I’ve even been told that “you guys are all just part of one big organization.” This misconception becomes damaging anytime the authorities seize animals from a bad rescue for poor care or when adopters believe that a rescue treated them unfairly or misrepresented a horse they took home. Those people might then avoid all rescues under the mistaken belief that we are all the same.

Here are some ways in which rescues differ:

• Private versus 501(c)(3). If a nonprofit organization qualifies for 501(c)(3) designation from the Internal Revenue Service, it doesn’t pay income tax on the money it raises and your donations to it may be tax-deductible. 501(c)(3) organizations must have a board of directors and make their financial information available to the public.

Private rescues are often run by a single person or a very small group of people rather than a board of directors. Donations to these groups are not tax-deductible, and they’re not required to make their records public. They are required to pay income taxes on any money they receive from fundraisers, adoptions, etc.

• Sanctuaries versus rehoming organizations. Sanctuaries provide lifelong homes to horses in need; they do not offer any for adoption. This means that sanctuaries can help only a limited number of horses: Once a sanctuary is full, it must wait until a horse dies before bringing in another.

Rehoming organizations do place their horses with adopters, but many rescues of this type also offer a limited number of sanctuary spots to horses they deem unadoptable for physical or behavioral reasons.

• Intake methods. Horses can come to rescues from auctions, racetracks, owner donations or law enforcement impoundments in cases of abuse or neglect. Some rescues focus only on horses coming through one route---racetracks, for example---but many take in those from a variety of backgrounds.

Myth #2: My tax dollars support rescues, so they don’t need any more from me
Reality: Rescues do not receive local, state or federal funding.

The only exception might be when a city or county contracts with a rescue for assistance in handling neglect cases and stray horses, but most often rescues perform these services at no cost to their local communities. When owners are found guilty of neglect, the judge may order them to pay restitution to the organization for expenses incurred while assisting law enforcement and rehabilitating the horse or horses, but rescues rarely receive the funds they’re awarded.

Because we don’t receive government support, rescues must raise the funds necessary to care for their horses through adoption fees, fundraising events and direct-mail solicitations. Before you throw out the next invitation to a fundraiser or the letter asking for a donation, please remember that the rescue sending it doesn’t see a penny of your tax dollars and needs help for the horses in its care.

Myth #3: Rescues get services and items for free, so their expenses are minimal
Reality: Although many rescues receive some discounted services and donated items, no veterinarian or farrier is always able to work for free or even discount his or her services. And many expenses can’t be discounted or donated.

For example, here are some of the 2011 expenses for the organization I run: $5,178 for insurance, $1,968 for postage, $33,061 for veterinary care, $1,900 for burial expenses for deceased horses, $10,830 for gas or mileage reimbursements for trailering horses, $6,875 for training horses, $8,386 for advertising and $2,306 for mileage
reimbursement for volunteers.

Myth #4: Everyone who works at a rescue is on salary
Reality: Some rescues have paid staff, but many do not.

The majority of rescues rely solely on volunteers. The oldest and most established rescues have paid staff, but even they rely heavily on volunteers to get everything done.

This means that someone is probably not available immediately to answer your calls or e-mails, and you may have to wait a few days for a reply. It also means that volunteers are often performing their rescue job after work or on the weekends and aren’t available during weekdays.

Myth #5: Rescues never enforce their contracts, so I can do what I want with my adopted horse
Reality: The purpose of the adoption contract is to ensure that the horses are placed in good homes. Most rescues follow up on their contracts. Rescue personnel perform follow-up visits not only to see that the horses are cared for, but also to make sure that the adoptive owners are happy with the arrangement. If someone violates the terms of an adoption contract, he or she may lose the horse and be liable to the rescue for the cost of enforcing that contract.

Myth #6: Rescues are happy to take in my old/lame/unsuitable horse
Reality: Most rescues can’t take in owner-donated retirees.

Some people want to use rescues as free retirement centers for horses they no longer need while still directing their care and visiting them. Most rescues do not take owner-donated horses, and those that do often have little room or resources for animals with serious medical needs or behavior problems. When a rescue does take in a donated horse, the animal is signed over to the organization and the owner waives all rights, including the ability to visit.

In general, rescues help neglected horses, those whose owners can no longer care for them, and others in serious need. They are not there to take in horses whose owners simply have no further use for them.

Myth #7: Every horse at a rescue is kept until he dies of natural causes
Reality: Rescues have limited funds and must often euthanatize horses.

While answering the phones and e-mails for my rescue, I’ve often spoken with people who want us to take in their older, ill or injured horse. Often a veterinarian has suggested that they euthanatize the horse, but they don’t want to. They believe that the best solution is to turn the horse over to a rescue, which will keep him healthy and happy until he dies of old age. However, rescues don’t have unlimited funds, and we sometimes must euthanatize a horse because we can’t spend thousands of dollars to treat an illness or injury.

Donating a horse who needs to be put down is unkind. Not only is he ill or in pain, he is then also uprooted from his home and taken to an unfamiliar place full of strange people and horses. Many scared or nervous horses may never settle in and relax before their life ends, surrounded by strangers. It is also unkind to put rescue personnel into that position. We care for our horses as if they are our own, and every decision to end a life is emotionally draining.

One story remains fresh in my mind. Years ago, our organization took in any horse whose owner didn’t want him, and we often received those who should never have been put on a trailer: Moon was one such horse.

Moon developed laminitis, and her owners managed her for several weeks before donating her to us. I followed the care instructions they gave me, but the mare worsened. When my veterinarian arrived to examine Moon, she quickly recommended euthanasia. I knew she was right, but I still cried. I cared about Moon and had hoped for a pain-free future for her. We laid her to rest, and I avoided the barn for two days.

Several months later, Moon’s former owner arrived at my barn demanding to see the horse. When I told her we’d put Moon down, her reply was, “Oh, I knew she needed to be euthanized. But I didn’t have the heart to do it, so I brought her to you!” Years later, I still ache for the horse I couldn’t help and feel anger toward the owner who forced me to make the decision she wouldn’t face.

If your horse needs to be put down, please, take care of him at home, in comfortable surroundings. Don’t pass that decision on to another person who has had to make that call far too often.

Myth #8: Rescue horses are used up or worthless
Reality: Rescues have all kinds of horses. Some aren’t sound for riding, but many can do anything any other horse can do.

Often, when I suggest that someone consider adopting their next horse instead of buying or breeding, I’m told, “I don’t want to adopt a horse---they’re not good for anything!” The person may go on to tell me she once saw a rescue horse who was lame or blind or crazy. And then I’ll hear, “Besides, if no one else wants them, why should I?”

Just because a horse is unwanted or neglected doesn’t make him worthless. Many may be sound, well-bred animals who landed in our care after their owners fell on hard times. We have many horses who are young, sound and can be trained for anything.

Storm’s story illustrates that point. The courts placed Storm with Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society after removing him from negligent owners. He was emaciated when he arrived, but fortunately, Storm recovered quickly.

After he was trained to ride, he was adopted by a teenage girl who met him and fell in love. And that was the beginning of an awesome career for Storm. He and his rider joined a 4-H drill team, and their wins have included a first place at their district competition. They’re also showing in English pleasure, Western pleasure and sidesaddle in open shows, and Storm has made it to the state semi-finals in team penning. He helps athletes who compete in Special Olympics horse shows through the S.H.A.R.E. (Special Horses and Riders Excelling) organization, and he took his rider to the regional and chapter Special Olympics shows in Western equitation, English equitation, trail, barrels and showmanship.

And yet Storm is just one of thousands of rescue horses who are com-peting, trail riding and working across the country. So the next time you are looking for a new horse, don’t overlook your local rescue. You may find a diamond in the rough who can become your next champion and companion.

Myth #9: Donating money or fostering or adopting horses are the only ways I can help
Reality: Rescues need volunteers in many areas.

Running a rescue takes an enormous amount of work, and since most rely heavily on volunteers, there’s likely to be a job for you, no
matter what your skills. Here are just a few possibilities:

• Trailering. If you have a safe trailer and an appropriate tow vehicle, you may be able to help with picking up horses, taking them to veterinary clinics and transporting them to their foster homes.

• Visiting foster or adoptive homes. Most rescues will inspect potential homes before allowing their horses to go to them, and they may also schedule follow-up visits later. This is an easy job that is a good fit for someone with a camera who enjoys meeting other horsepeople.

• Investigating neglect complaints. The rescue may offer neglect/abuse- investigation training classes, or they may need experienced horsemen and horsewomen who can accompany local law enforcement out on calls.

• Doing routine horse care. Reliable, experienced horsepeople may be needed to do daily chores, such as feeding, cleaning pens or stalls, grooming, or showing horses to prospective adopters.

• Training. Many horses arrive with little or no training, so rescues appreciate help from professional trainers and experienced horsepeople who can help prepare them for adoption.

• Fundraising. Bringing in the money necessary to keep a rescue going is a nonstop concern. Volunteers are always needed to organize and participate in fundraising.

• Marketing, public relations, accounting, writing and more. In many ways running a rescue is like operating a business, and all the same professional skills are needed. If you have a skill you would like to use to help horses, a rescue can help you put your experience to work---and it looks good on a resume, too.

Whether you are looking for a new horse, have some time to give, or can donate money or equipment, I hope you’ll consider visiting a rescue and helping out. It really does take the horse community working together to improve the lives of the horses who need us.

The proposal is to create a wild horse eco-sanctuary of a non-reproductive herd on most of the existing Spruce Grazing Allotment, including about 14,000 acres of private land and 508,000 acres of public land, approximately 25 miles southeast of Wells, Nev.  The Notice of Intent opens a 30-day public scoping period that will end Sept. 15, 2012 or 15 days after the last public scoping open house.  Representatives will be on hand at each scoping open house to answer questions.

Public scoping open houses are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. at the following dates and locations:

Authorizing the proposal could 1) restructure the three wild horse herd management areas within the project area and 2) remove a portion of the Spruce Allotment from the N1 Grazing District. Both actions would require an amendment to the 1985 Wells Resource Management Plan.

The public is being asked to identify issues relevant to the preparation of an EIS for the proposed eco-sanctuary and the possible plan.  The wild horse eco-sanctuary would be operated by Saving America’s Mustangs, a non-profit group, which has purchased the Spruce Ranch and acquired the associated grazing permit in the Spruce Allotment.  The proponent also seeks to develop an eco-tourism operation in conjunction with the wild horse eco-sanctuary.

The BLM has identified preliminary issues to include

  • Potential effects to archaeological resources
  • Potential effect to Greater sage-grouse and other sensitive species
  • Potential effects to important elk, mule deer and other wildlife habitats
  • Ability to manage healthy wild horse populations
  • Ensure public access for recreational purposes

BLM is asking, as part of the scoping effort, for the public to submit any suggestions for consideration, and any and all information that would help provide for a thorough and accurate analysis.

Shopping, team roping, gambling, team roping

Drop your bags at the Silver Legacy Resort and head out to Reno’s downtown district. Gear up for the Bob Feist Invitational at D Bar M Western Store, which has everything from boots to tack and all in-between. When the wife wants to shop, take her to one of the area’s many shopping centers, such as the Truckee River Arts District or the Outlets at Legends. While at Legends, head to Scheel’s Sporting Goods store to treat yourself to some outdoor gear. With two large aquariums, a Ferris wheel, shooting gallery, sports and hunting simulators, a restaurant, and even more, it isn’t your granddaddy’s sports store. Looking for outdoor adventure without leaving the urban vibe? Head to Kayak Park where you can kayak the Truckee River, right through the center of downtown Reno. The weekend of the BFI is the Reno River Festival, where even man’s best friend can get in on the action with their dock diving competition. If you’d rather ride the range on solid ground, Wild Sierra Adventures offers ATV tours and includes complementary shuttle pickup at your hotel. Later, dig into the past of Reno by heading to the Nevada Historical Society’s Museum, which has several exhibits on Nevada’s mining, ranching, pioneer, gaming, native history, and somewhat shady past.

Over at the rodeo grounds, on Saturday, a 4D barrel race, a cowdog trial and kids activities are all happening at the indoor arena. Plus, the annual Reno Rodeo parade will be marching through downtown. If you’ve got a roping on the brain, slack starts at 2 p.m. and the second performance of the rodeo kicks off at 7 that night.
With the first day winding down, treat yourself to some high class dining and head to the 4th Street Bistro to sample its award-winning wine. If you fancy some good brews to whet your whistle, head to the Biggest Little City Bar or local favorite, Brew Brothers, at the Eldorado. Afterwards, head to Circus Circus to enjoy one of four circus acts: from Chinese acrobats to incredible canine feats. For the athletic acrobatics of broncs and bulls, head to the Livestock Event Center to check out the venue for the BFI and watch some of the other events of the week-long Reno Rodeo. In between all the excitement of a first day in Reno, don’t forget to take some time to flirt with Lady Luck. Reno is home to around 40 casinos. End your day by hiking or biking along one of Washoe Lake State Park’s many trails, or enjoy the scenic vistas at Sun Valley Regional Park. Since many trails are also equestrian use, you can end an exciting weekend with a scene right out of an old Western: by riding into the sunset.

Day Two, Sunday June 17: 
North of town and Lake Tahoe

Day two is a great day to get out of the metropolitan area and see what else the Reno/Tahoe area has to offer, all within an hour’s drive of the Bob Feist Invitational and the Silver Legacy Resort. The North Shore of Lake Tahoe is only 40 minutes outside of town and is unique in that it sits on the border between California and Nevada. Spend the day on one of the many beaches of Tahoe’s North Shore, or be adventurous and look for one of Tahoe’s lesser-known hidden beaches like Chimney Beach. If you bring man’s best friend along, there are numerous beaches on the East Shore and Coon Street Beach (Dog Beach) in King’s Beach that are dog friendly. After a day by the lake, head into the Char Pit at King’s Beach, Calif., for their famous burgers, or stay on the Nevada side of the border and eat at the local favorite Jack Rabbit Moon or Bite Restaurant, an American Tapas bar, both in Incline Village. If you have a hankering for a more Western atmosphere, head to the Hyatt’s Cutthroat’s Saloon with its dollar bill ceiling and walls and large wooden bar with stylized leather bar stools.

If you just can’t stay away from the rodeo grounds, there’s another 4D barrel race, cowboy church and slack again on Sunday. Plus, the third performance of the rodeo kicks off at 7 p.m.

Alternatively, for a more animal-themed adventure, drive north of town. First stop is Animal Ark, an animal sanctuary that allows you to get up close with critters such as mountain lions, tigers and bears (oh my!). The weekend of the Bob Feist Invitational is the perfect weekend to visit as it is their annual Dash 4 Dads Cheetah Run, where you will have the rare opportunity to watch a cheetah running at speeds any roping horse would envy. No cowboy vacation could be complete without the opportunity to see some true American legends. Sonny Boys Tours offers several wild mustang tours, with one starting just five miles outside of town. If thinking about the BFI has got you itching to ride, head to Rancho Red Rock, which offers trail rides through Pinnacles or the Sand Hills, and offers additional viewing opportunities for mustangs. Fancy something fancy (and practical) to put on your mount before you ride off to the Bob Feist? Sierra Nevada Alpacas sells saddle pads made out of their own alpaca’s wool. Call ahead for a chance to meet some of these wooly friends.

Day Three: Monday, June 18: 
Bob Feist Invitational Roping Day!

The BFI kicks off at 8 a.m., but be sure to take the time to treat yourself and your wife to a world class spa experience at the Spa Tuscana at the Peppermill or the Atlantis Spa. After you’re refreshed, and ready to ride, head to the Livestock Events Center just east of downtown. As you make your way through downtown Reno, don’t miss the current Reno arch, the fourth incarnation of the 1926 sign built to promote coast-to-coast travel. For a break from the roping, grab a quick lunch at Silver Legacy’s Fairchild’s Oyster Bar. While at the Livestock Event Center, check out the Double R Marketplace shopping expo for 150 vendors selling everything a cowboy (or gal!) could possibly hope to own. Of course, slack is going again over at the outdoor arena if you need a chance to see something other than team roping, and the 4th perf begins at 7 p.m. When the roping’s over and you feel the need to bust out your country dance moves, head to Mustangs over at the Grand Sierra Resort, which features live country bands. Later, head back to the Silver Legacy to see an authentic mining rig in action with hourly laser light shows. After the show, stay in the hotel for some cowboy sustenance at Sterling’s Seafood Steakhouse. Hang out around the Silver Legacy Resort long enough, and you may get the chance to swap roping stories and advice with pro ropers ,before turning in. What a perfect end to an exciting cowboy getaway.

After the Homestretch - Arizona
The need to find homes for horses retiring off the race track is great. After The Homestretch-Arizona was formed to fill this niche. From the idea to the reality happened in a very short time span. Nine people expressed a desire to form a Board. We applied to the State of Arizona to become a non-profit corporation and received approval July 25, 2011. Our first Board meeting was held on August 25 and we immediately applied to the IRS for our 501c3 status. Within 3 weeks we received our IRS Determination Letter (September 15, 2011). In October we began rescuing horses who had retired from the track. Our first 4 horses were horses who had been retired for a few years and are already in training to find new homes. In December 2011, we rescued 3 horses directly off the track. As of this writing (12/12/11) all 3 are resting and are in rehabilitation in foster homes.

Mission: After The Homestretch-Arizona was set up to provide rest, rehabilitation, and retraining in a new career for Arizona ex-racehorses with the goal of finding them loving, adoptive non-racing homes.

Philosophy: Racehorses were bred to be fine athletes with a lot of heart and intelligence. These horses have proved to be very versatile by excelling in other disciplines such as dressage, jumping, pleasure riding, trail, and show competitions as well as becoming excellent companions. They just need a chance to find that second career and a new life after their racing careers have ended ... "after the homestretch."

The refuge was formed by Walton County, Fla.--resident Laurie Hood in 2007 when she discovered that countless animals were being euthanized due to the lack of a no-kill shelter/adoption organization in the area. American Standardbred Adoption Program, Inc. was founded in 1994 by a small group of dedicated individuals and professionals who saw a need for a placement service for non-racing Standardbreds. This placement service honors and serves the people and horses within the harness racing industry around the country, with special emphasis on Standardbreds in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. The American Standardbred Adoption Program also serves as a rescue facility and sanctuary for abandoned, abused, or neglected horses of all breeds, and is listed by the Humane Society of the United States as a humane equine rescue organization. Horses of all other breeds are accepted into placement by ASAP, Inc.

A great deal of the American Standardbred Adoption Program's efforts center around educating young people about horsemanship and harness racing. Youth programs focus on youth at risk and youth with disabilities, offering ASAP's facilities on an ongoing basis for community service or schooling involving horsemanship and riding or driving.

The American Standardbred Adoption Program seeks only the most qualified homes in the hopes of obtaining permanent placement for each horse in its care. A contract must be signed by potential adopters as a prerequisite to acquiring a horse through our program. An adoption fee is required.

Every 5 minutes an American horse is slaughtered. This program is an alternative to auctions and horse slaughter. We saw a need and created a way to help them offering them that assistance through our website and other media social sites and place about a thousand horses through this program annually. Unfortunately, due to time constraints and the lack of assuring availability, we are not able to hold appointments to show them like we do the horses that are at our traditional rescues. We do independent evaluations of these horses this information along with any information gathered from research is provided on the website. Helping a horse through the broker program IS rescue. However, there are insurance programs to cover your financial investment and we highly suggest that you consider and purchase insurance for your financial investment.

Ownership Assistance Placement. We offer owners a way to place their horses by listing them on our high traffic website and international network. This is a preventative program to assist in keeping horses out of the auction/slaughter circuit. Assisting owners in placing their horses allows the owners to be involved in the process and provides less stress to the horse by moving from current home into the new home without taking the horse into the traditional rescue. We advise owners to use a written contract, check references and do a home check. We offer the use of our placement forms edited to remove our information replacing it with your own information. With this program we can always assist a horse in need without having to have an opening at the rescue for the horse and keeping openings for the most urgent needs. Beauty's Haven Farm and Equine Rescue
Our purpose is to help as many equine friends as possible when they are in need. We network with other rescue organizations and individuals, and we work to educate others about horse slaughter in an effort to make it illegal-- not just in the United States but also in Canada, Mexico, and other countries.

Horses that arrive at our rescue come from auctions and kill buyers; some are surrendered by owners who can no longer care for them, and some are seized by authorities. We try to help horses that are desperately in need of a safe place to go before they end up in the slaughter pipeline and are inhumanely trucked off across the borders to Canada or Mexico, where they are slaughtered for human consumption. Horses that end up at auctions often wind up in the hands of kill buyers.

Sometimes we pay to get a horse out of a desperate situation, which shouldn't be the case. But sometimes time is of the essence in saving a horse's life.

Once a horse is here, then come the costs of rehabilitation, training, proper feed, and care. Expenses include initial and follow-on vet exams, farrier work, vaccines, wormers, supplements, dental care, grain, feed, and other necessities, which are costly. Some horses with special needs will live out their days here.

Begin Again Horse Rescue
Begin Again Horse Rescue is a recognized 501c-3, not for profit, AAEP(American Association of Equine Practitioners) inspected and approved horse rescue. We are a group of experienced horse people who have been individually taking in unwanted and neglected horses for years. We decided to pool our resources and work together to save horses that are ‚"at risk," neglected or bound for slaughter. On occasion, we will accept horses from owners who can no longer care for them due to financial hardship, illness or misfortune. Because of our limited resources as well as our need to be available to the families that take our horses, we have limited our outreach and adoptions to an area no more than two hours from our facility.

Begin Again Horse Rescue is located on a 10 acre farm in Lima, New York. It is entirely funded by donations from those who understand the plight of these horses and are willing to help. There is a nominal fee when a horse is placed from Begin Again. This fee helps to cover the initial veterinary care all our horses receive when they are accepted into the program. A donation is requested and greatly appreciated from those who relinquish one or more horses as well. It is from these donations that we can continue to help other horses in need. There is no membership fee. We rely on donations, fundraisers, grants, and sponsors to fund our operations. We look far and wide to animal lovers who want to help and do the right thing for horses that need our care. Our motto is: " One by one."

Our Mission
Our mission is to provide a safe, permanent, environment for unwanted, ‚"at risk" and neglected horses to prevent as many as possible from suffering or going to slaughter. We will rehabilitate them when possible and find ‚"permanent lease" homes for them. In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. Despite the commitment of shelter workers to the animal in their care, the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that terrible number.

Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign
created a new vision: A grassroots effort to place
dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable"
into good homes, and to reduce the number of
unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter
programs. Since then, the number of dogs and
cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen to
approximately 5 million a year. There has been
much progress,but there is still much more to do.

The next phase of this work -- bringing the number
down to essentially zero -- will take more work and
some bold new initiatives. Shelters are crowded with
pit bulls, dogs abandoned after being bought from pet stores, stray cats rounded up on the streets and not looking their very best when they're brought in, and other pets abandoned or neglected.

Blaze's Tribute Equine Rescue
Blaze's Tribute Equine Rescue was established in early 2001. We named our rescue on behalf of one of our horses, Blaze. That summer we were residing in Guthrie, Oklahoma, when a large fire spread very quickly throughout Guthrie. We had to evacuate, but not without our precious horses. As we were leaving ,we crossed a wooden bridge and the floor of the horse trailer fell through underneath Blaze. Unfortunately, her hind legs were injured pretty badly. We tried to get her veterinary assistance, but upon examining her legs, they all stated that we needed to find another horse. We weren't giving up on her that easily. After much searching we located a vet that was willing to give her a chance. A chance that she deserved. After a month of rehabilitation following surgery and keeping it easy on her legs, she made a full recovery. Blaze only has minor scars on her legs today. Little did we know that was only the beginning of our rescue attempts.

Blaze's Tribute Equine Rescue depends upon the heart felt generosity of others to accomplish our goals. Not only do we depend on you – our horses do as well. Caring for a rescued horse requires substantial yearly costs. Many rescues require specific dietary needs, extensive hoof care treatments, X-rays of injuries, geldings and at the minimum a complete dose of yearly shots including West Nile and routine wormings. To meet these needs we accept both Cash donations and item donations consisting of hay, grain, or any supplies directed to Horse Care. All donations are tax deductible.

Borrowed Freedom Equine Assisted Therapies
The Farm at Nanticoke Creek was founded by Colleen Cheechalk, her husband Todd, and daughter Ally in 1998. The farm is currently home to our seven horses, six of which have been brought here in cooperation with Sunkissed Acres Rescue and Retirement in Summerville, GA. Many of the horses and livestock that come here have histories that often include abuse, neglect or a close encounter with a slaughter truck. The chickens and ducks that are raised here are Heritage Breeds and listed with the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy. We are one of only a handful of breeders and preservationists dedicated to securing a future for the Welsh Harlequin (Critical), Cayuga (Threatened), Indian Runner and Swedish (both on the watch list) ducks and the Dominique Chicken (Watch list). Animals who come here for rehabilitation stay at the farm for the rest of their lives and serve as teachers who help children and adults to learn about themselves and reconnect with the environment.

In addition to the farm animals, we are also a National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat and we create and maintain more than 3 acres of natural habitat for the many species that call our farm home. Bright Futures Farm
Bright Futures Farm is an equine charity whose primary focus is re-homing off the track Thoroughbreds‚Ķhorses that can no longer race due to disinterest or injury. Buckland Equine Rescue, Inc,
Since 2007, Buckland Equine Rescue, Inc., or BERI, as we call it, has followed an unwavering mission. To rescue, rehabilitate, retrain and rehome as many viable equines as possible. And as of January 2013, our mission has resulted in the rescue of more then 80 horses who otherwise would be left to the horrors of abuse, neglect, slaughter or starvation.

California Coastal Horse Rescue

Curly Horse Rescue Inc
The concept of Curly Horse Rescue was born after a single individual privately rescued a herd of 21 starved and neglected Curly horses from Canada. She arranged transportation, rescued and rehabilitated them, with the help of a handful of volunteers who raised funds to help her pay for their rescue.

These volunteers realized that there was a need for Curly Horse Rescue, as Curly horses have been rescued by private individuals from those misinformed individuals who believed that Curlies did not require basic necessities like hoofcare and proper healthy feed, or those that thought the Curly coat was a defect or abomination and relegated them to the back lot. Diamonds in the Rough Equine Rescue
Some of our horses come to us because loving owners can no longer afford to take care of their horses. However, many come to us because animal control has become involved. The horses many times are very sick and underweight.

Doxy's Horse Recovery Inc.
Doxy's Horse Recovery is run by a couple who feel passionate about caring for unwanted horses and placing them in loving new homes. Doxy's was started when they moved to the country from a residential area so they could continue with their rescue of dachshunds. Their new location also offered them the opportunity to begin taking in and re-homing horses. The name Doxy's comes from the many dachshunds they have in addition to the horses.

Doxy's Horse Recovery, Inc.'s mission is to recover, rehabilitate and re-home horses that otherwise have no chance at life and are typically headed to facilities for slaughter and sold as meat. Some of these horses come through the auction and others are direct cast-offs from the horse racing industry. When you adopt a horse from Doxy's you are helping to save a life and to further Doxy's mission.

Doxy's is committed to education as the only solution to the plight of horses by educating individuals and the public about proper care and responsibilities, the issues of neglect, abuse and slaughter and over-breeding.

Eagle Hill Equine Rescue
Eagle Hill Equine Rescue (EHER), a non-profit, organization is located just 11 miles off exit 130B (RT 3) on I-95 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. After 5 ¬Ω miles, just before entering Chancellorsville Battlefield, turn right at the light at the intersection of Route 3 and Elys Ford Road (RT 610). You will be passing over a new reservoir, almost at road level, and proceeding on Elys Ford until you come to a very steep decline and cross the Rapidan River. At this point the spelling of the road changes to Eleys Ford Road. Our entrance is the first driveway on the left. There is an automatic gate with the entrance code of 1- 2- 3- 4 and the gate will close on its own after giving you plenty of time to enter the farm.

In addition, we have a leased facility just one mile from EHER, which is over 30 acres, has a nine stall barn and will become our training facility in Spring 2010.

We specialize in young horses, mostly under the age of 8, some arrive here as 4 or 5 day old orphaned foals, which we hand raise, to horses ready for saddle training up to the age of 8. We also have quite a few horses that will remain under 14.2 that would make outstanding 4H or Pony Club projects.

We also feature seasoned riding horses, horses that are new to the saddle that need additional hours of training and quite a few potential eventers, hunters/jumpers and dressage prospects. In this category are registered Quarter Horses, Thoroughbreds, Thoroughbred/Draft Crosses (mainly Shire and Percheron) and Arabian/Thoroughbred Crosses. We are adding to our new riding horses thanks to Kelsi, a very talented trainer. These trained horses are being ridden regularly by our extensive number of experienced riders.

We routinely have an average of about 90 horses and nurse mare foals up for adoption. Please check our listing to see if one is right for your family! FalconRidge Equine Rescue
FalconRidge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, humane equine organization, sanctuary, rehabilitation and training center for the horse. During rehabilitation, the horses are exercised and properly socialized with other horses and people. Some arrive extremely depressed, not wanting much to do with other horses or humans. Within months they have transformed into horses that play and interact happily.

Our efforts depend on a strong alliance between race tracks, industry officials, horsemen, owners, trainers, jockeys and fans. Our Commitment
In April 2009, recognizing the need for a South Florida based Thoroughbred retirement program, a group of committed volunteers began a retirement and placement program dedicated specifically to horses that competed at either Calder Race Course or Gulfstream Park during their racing careers.Spearheaded by the Florida Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association (FHBPA), Calder Race Course, Gulfstream Park and professional jockeys, a program was created for the sole purpose of finding adoptive "forever" homes for retired Thoroughbreds.The group has since evolved into Florida TRAC (Thoroughbred Retirement & Adoptive Care). Since its inception in 2009, over 400 horses have entered the program. Approximately, one-third have been placed in adoptive homes.

Front Range Equine Rescue
Front Range Equine Rescue began in 1997 and was incorporated as a Colorado non-profit on 8/1/97. Front Range Equine Rescue began as an all volunteer organization with Board members providing the initial foster homes. A small self-care facility soon housed several of the incoming rescue horses as well.

Over the years, Front Range has worked hard to increase its capacity and was able to purchase a 40-acre facility in Larkspur in 2006. Georgia Equine Rescue League Ltd.
About Us:
While the Georgia Dept. of Agriculture, Equine Division is charged with enforcement of laws which protect equine in Georgia, there are no state funds allocated for the care of animals which are seized and impounded by GDA Inspectors due to neglect. That program is forced to rely heavily on public donations. To date, GERL has provided over $360,000 to support the GDA Equine Division.

In addition, GERL has developed programs to help horses in other ways. We are now working with local law enforcement and animal control agencies to insure more widespread enforcement of equine protection laws. This effort involves the training of officers regarding proper horse handling and providing temporary equine holding facilities where needed.

GERL is proud of our many success stories but we are aware that none of them would have been possible without the ongoing support of our members and others who share our love and concern for horses. The continuing success of GERL depends on annual membership dues, various donations from individuals and other organizations, as well as the time and energy of our many volunteers . Glen Ellen Vocational Academy
Located in Glen Ellen, California, GEVA was founded for two equally important purposes: 1) to provide care and shelter for horses who were retired due to injury or age, were the victims of abuse or negligence, or were merely in need of a home, and 2) to teach people the skills necessary to work with horses in a safe, humane and confident manner. If the handler is knowledgeable, the problem of unintentional abuse to the horse is often avoided.

Many horses come to GEVA due to injuries that require either surgery or an extended period of rest and because their owner is either unwilling or unable to assume the cost of that care. Frequently, an owner in such circumstances is faced with the choice of needlessly euthanizing the horse or, worse, selling it for slaughter. GEVA provides an alternative to this grim choice. When horses come to GEVA, they have a home for life or if extended rest is all that is needed. GEVA may offer that horse for adoption to a good home. An adopted horse from GEVA may return to GEVA at any time should the adoption not work.

Godspeed Horse Hostel
The mission of this rescue has many components. First and foremost is to purchase Premarin weanling horses from Canada and the United States that would otherwise be slaughtered and then transport, train, and donate them to NAHRA certified therapeutic riding programs and The Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association accredited colleges. We currently have three horses in service to the handicap.

The rescue invented and patented an internationally distributed horse treat called U-Bake Horse Treats. When the treats are sold, all proceeds go to the rescue. These treats are manufactured as part of the job site curriculum requirement by students at The Maplebrook School; a post secondary school for the learning disabled. Students may also fulfill their requirement by working a semester at the farm. We have had two students thus far.

The rescue also works as a placement agency in the tri-state area for unwanted horses and has a Subsidized Horse Boarding Program for horses that need re-homing. We place an additional 4-6 horses annually this way.

Habitat for Horses
It seems like it was back in the Dark Ages when Habitat for Horses was first started, although it was only in 1997 when we took in our first horses in response to a plea from a local family that simply couldn't handle seeing a skinny horse a few houses down the street from them. In 1998 we applied for and received our non-profit status, took a number of Equine Cruelty Investigation courses and starting applying to local law enforcement agencies to let us help them handle their horse cases.

During those times most local law enforcement agencies didn't touch large animals. Excuses of, "he's old, that's why he's skinny," and "I'm about to buy feed and hay," were generally accepted and neglected horses were left alone to starve. While we met with some resistance, most officers accepted us with open arms. All we required from them was to have an officer at the scene and have the same officer appear in court. We did the rest, from transportation, housing, feeding, medical workup, farrier work, court appearance and testimony to finding an adopter.

Word circulated quickly and soon we had officers calling us, "just to take a look at some horses." From those first few months of becoming established and being professional in everything we did, the calls for assistance seemed to explode. The reputation of Habitat for Horses continued to grow as an organization that was more than willing to assist law enforcement not just in the legal aspects of enforcement, but in providing education to horse owners who wanted to keep their horses healthy but did not have the knowledge of equine husbandry necessary.

Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, Inc.
This organization will provide education regarding equine care to the public, assist governmental authorities in rescuing and rehabilitating equines who have been neglected or abused, and provide foster-care, rehabilitation and rehoming services for horses that have been abandoned, surrendered to the organization, or seized by law enforcement agencies. Heaven Can Wait Equine Rescue
Heaven Can Wait Equine Rescue is located in Cameron, Ontario, Canada - approx 2 hours NE of Toronto, just 10 minutes North of Lindsay. This Equine Rescue was started by Claire Malcolm in 1997 to help save horses and ponies from slaughter, and take in any unwanted horse or pony and find them a new, loving home. Not all Horses at HCW are old and lame, or come from abusive/neglect situations, some come from private individuals who want to find a good home for their horse, but don't have the time or knowledge to sell it privately, but don't want to send it to an auction, so they send them here to HCW to find a good home. As you know horses that end up at auctions do have a chance to get bid on by a caring family home, but they also risk the chance of being bid on by a bad home or worse, the meat man.

HCW has found loving new homes for over 1000++ equines in the past 15 years (& has even helped find new homes for a few donkeys, pigs, goats, cats & dogs along the way!).

A disabled veteran, despite his financial limitations, now comes here twice a week. The equines here are special and they help him with his life struggles as well as many others. Our gate is always open to all those who need the breath of an equine to ease their pain of reality. .

Horse Haven of Tennessee
Purpose of Horse Haven of Tennessee
Rescue equine from cruel or dangerous situations; provide shelter, care, rehabilitation, and adoption for abused and neglected equine; assist law enforcement with investigations and court preparation; educate owners on compassion and responsible equine ownership; heighten public awareness about abuse and neglect of equine; and, provide education to those who handle cruelty and neglect calls, and other equine emergencies with their county.

Our mission statement is to advocate for, rescue, protect, and defend our God-given equine from abuse and neglect in Tennessee.

HHT investigates calls, rescues suffering horses, works to fund the organization's work, finds volunteers, works with law enforcement, finds vet care for those equine that need medical attention, works to change current laws to better serve the abused and neglected, attends equine related events within Tennessee to educate horse owners, finds businesses to help, manages a website and other social media and fund raising sites, works to prosecute serious offenders, and advocates for equine protection laws.

Horse Helpers
Horse Helpers is located on Wisteria Farm west of Boone, NC. We are the only 501c3 equine rescue serving Watauga, Ashe, and Avery Counties in North Carolina and nearby Tennessee. Our main goal is to offer aide to horses, donkeys, and mules. We also provide a forum for education on humane animal care and communication.

Wisteria Farm is located on 5 acres in a mountain farming community. We have a main barn that allows us to have up to 10 rescues at a time along with a quarantine barn for newly arriving horses. We have private paddocks for sick horses and rent an additional 25 acres of pasture. At the moment we have two main auxiliary locations, one that house up to seven horses through the generous support and work of the property owner and in the summer we have another 10 acres available. This kind of flexibility has allowed us to create compatible herds of horses (we have a senior center and our herd of ridable horses) as well as paddocks in which we can separate sick or injured horses from the main herds.

Our volunteer support and community support continues to grow as awareness of Horse Helpers increases. We are supporters of the local sustainable development community as well as links to Appalachian State University and Watauga High Schools Mountain Alliance.

Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills Inc
Established in 2007, HSSF's Law Enforcement Division's humane officer's are dedicated to investigating animal abuse and cruelty cases and working with the district attorney's office and law enforcement to prosecute individuals. HSSF's Humane Officers are highly trained, sworn personnel appointed by the Superior Court. These officers have all the powers of a peace officer with authority to investigate animal abuse, neglect and cruelty. Humane Officers also have the power to issue citations, make arrests and conduct searches - if necessary, to prevent animal abuse anywhere in the state of California.

Illinois Equine Humane Center
The Illinois Equine Humane Center was founded in 2008 in order to provide humane treatment and shelter while working as a clearinghouse to seek adoptive homes for all of Illinois' unwanted equines, regardless of breed.

The ILEHC also seeks to educate the public and raise awareness for responsible equine ownership so that fewer horses end up in crisis.

Our resources are focused on providing a very necessary service - helping owners place unwanted horses in new homes. Sometimes this will mean working with owners to identify appropriate outlets for their horses and sometimes this will mean accepting horses into our shelter before adopting them into new homes.

Please note: Please call the Illinois Department of Agriculture Bureau of Animal Welfare at 217-782-6657 to report animal abuse or neglect. At this time, the ILEHC does not plan to investigate these types of complaints as the Department and several other non-profit organizations in Illinois perform this very necessary service.

Medicine Horse Program
Medicine Horse Program enhances the mental health and life skills of youth, adults, families, and groups through therapeutic interaction with horses. We use rescued, rehabilitated and donated horses who work with clients in "reciprocal healing."

Medicine Horse Program also uses mindfulness based techniques in equine-assisted psychotherapy. Using horses as co-facilitators, therapists help soldiers connect in relationship with each other and the horses.

"The wild horses help me to open up. The more I open up, the more they connect with me. It spirals outward, and I start opening up more with people in my day to day life," said John, a Viet Nam vet.

Most of the mustangs at Medicine Horse, caught recently on the range, are hypervigilent, with a strong flight instinct, and an aversion to being touched.

"The symptoms are the same as PTSD," one veteran said, "When I got home from the war, I didn't want anyone to touch me. "

As the horses learn to trust humans, the veterans see real results. In the process, they learn to trust the horses and begin to heal as well.

An astonished veteran exclaimed at the progress of a mustang named Mama, "She is not the same horse we worked with a month ago. If Mama can heal so quickly, so can we. She gives us hope."

New England Thoroughbred Retirement Center
Welcome to The New England Thoroughbred Retirement Center. Our mission is simply to place retired Thoroughbred racehorses into loving new homes and exciting new careers.

We work directly with professional horsemen, owners and breeders at racecourses and training centers across the United States and around the world to ensure that Thoroughbred horses no longer fit for competition on the racecourse are provided with first-rate care upon retiring from their racing careers. Each of our Thoroughbreds is stabled and rehabilitated at our own Watchtower Farm in Deerfield, New Hampshire.

Since beginning our adoption program in 2008, we've taken in over eighty Thoroughbreds from Kentucky, Florida, New York, California, Pennsylvania, Canada, England, Ireland and Brazil. Our Thoroughbreds have begun new lives as dressage, hunter-jumper and eventing prospects, as trail horses, Pony Club and 4-H projects, as school horses and as beloved family pets and companion animals.

New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program - Marysville, Ohio
New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program was founded in 1992 to offer retiring racehorses a safe-haven, rehabilitation, and continued education through placement in experienced, caring homes. Most of the horses arriving at New Vocations are injured and thin, suffering the normal occupational hazards of racing. Without a useful skill to offer their previous option was often a one-way ticket to the local livestock auction. New Vocations provides a safety net for these horses matching them with qualified individuals and following up on their rehabilitation and vocational training to ensure a successful transition.

Over 3,700 retiring Standardbreds and Thoroughbreds have been placed in qualified homes through the New Vocations effort since 1992, including 423 ex-racehorses that were placed in 2011. These horses have come from 18 states and been adopted by families throughout the country.

Panhandle Equine Rescue
Panhandle Equine Rescue, Inc. was founded by a small group of concerned citizens, when it was discovered that equine neglect cases were not being properly handled by the appropriate authorities. Equine were "slipping through the cracks" and nothing was being done to ensure their welfare. PER became incorporated on February 1, 2005 and shortly thereafter, three PER members were authorized by the court of Escambia County, Florida under FL. Statute 828.03 to investigate reports of equine in trouble and verify if there have been violations of state laws made for the purpose of protecting animals or preventing any act of cruelty to animals. Our investigators attended a Horse Cruelty Investigation Workshop at North Carolina State University and still do continued education at every opportunity.

River Edge Farm Horse Rescue
River Edge Farm Horse Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)(3) public charity that is owned and operated by Jane McAllister and her son Ken, who have been rehabilitating horses for many years. They have 63 beautiful acres in Middle Tennessee where horses of all breeds and ages are taken in and cared for. Due to the drought in 2007 and the recent down turn in the economy, the number of horses at the rescue has greatly increased, causing an increase in the need for funds. Tax deductible donations are always welcomed, and are fully used to help with costs of the rescue.

We strive to provide the best care possible for every horse that comes to the rescue by beginning with an individual evaluation. Each horse receives vet care (including dental work and vaccinations), hoof care, and a nutrition plan. Professional hoof care is donated by Ken's Farrier Service. Nutrition requirements and feeding schedules are developed initially, and then adjusted as the horse progresses. In addition to the basics, some horses have special needs that require long term training in order to make them candidates for adoption.

Dad had his own stable of horses — I mean alot of horses! His forte was problem horses. He'd even buy horses from the auctions and bring them home just to save them. That's how I got my first horse. He gave me three problem horses and said fix them or tell him why not and I could choose one of the three for my own. Horses saved my life. I can't even imagine how bad it could have been. I walked away from the world of abuse and stepped into the wonderful happy world of horses. That is the deep down reason why I started Sacred Grounds Rescue Ranch. I figure if I can save just one kid from those nightmares, then its all worth while.

Saddlebred Rescue, Inc.
Saddlebred Rescue is a truly unique rescue that incorporates the thinking and practices of a professional show stable with the realities of the plight of unwanted horses today.

SBR buys all horses in our program mostly from auctions and sales where they were slaughter bound. We have our own professional trainer who works with each horse to evaluate and design a schooling program to help the horse be as place-able as possible.

All horses in our program are evaluated by two professional horse trainers before they are placed.

Each horse's overall health condition is assessed by our staff, and veterinarian, if necessary, and immediately-needed health issues are treated. Chronic conditions are recorded as such.

All SBR horses are in a lifetime program and will always have the option of being returned to SBR if the adopter's circumstances change.

SBR encourages every potential adopter to visit our facility and try out any of our treasures that may be a potential match.

While we encourage visits, we understand it is not always possible to visit us on-site. In these cases, our trainers work with you to understand your needs and to pick out a horse that is perfect for you. Our placement rate is very high and returns to SBR for incompatibility are almost nonexistent.

Sammie's Friends
The mission of Sammie's Friends is to provide medical care for the animals at the Nevada County Animal Shelter, making them adoptable, and to support other disadvantaged animals in Nevada County that without help would otherwise be euthanized to end their suffering.

We accept donations to pay for medical care for the animals. Many times the animals have conditions which keeps them from being adopted, yet the condition is not considered an emergency because it is not life-threatening (i.e. demodectic mange, broken legs and hips, amputation of legs, respiratory infections, foxtails in the ear and nose, and many more conditions). If these medical issues are not cared for, no one will adopt them because of the condition they are in.

Animals often come to the Shelter because they are strays and have been abandoned by people who should have cared for them. Many of these animals have medical problems. In 2008, Sammie's Friends paid for medical care for 444 animals and spent more than $122,000 for their care. In 2009, Sammie's Friends helped 619 animals by spending $143,000 for their medical care. With your continuing donations, we can help even more animals in the future.

Save a Forgotten Equine Horse Rescue
Since 2005, Save a Forgotten Equine (SAFE) has been rescuing and rehabilitating horses that have been starved, neglected, abused or are unwanted. We have formal agreements in place with Animal Control agencies in King, Pierce and Skagit counties to support their fight to protect horses in this region. SAFE also provides assistance to horse owners struggling to care for their animals in the current economy.

SAFE is deeply committed to its rescued horses. We have extensive experience in equine rehabilitation and have successfully brought many neglected horses back from the brink of starvation. Our rehabilitation efforts are supported by local veterinarian Dr Hannah Evergreen DVM's Northwest Equine Stewardship Center as well as Pilchuck Equine Hospital. All of our horses are provided with routine vet care, dental care, vaccinations, and farrier care. Once a horse has been successfully rehabilitated, we carefully evaluate them to discover their strengths and suitabilities, and we provide many of these horses with professional training to help ensure them a safe and productive future. While at SAFE, horses receive a lot of personal attention and handling. Our rideable horses are worked on a regular basis, with many being ridden in lessons under the supervision of a trainer.

Once a horse is ready for a permanent home, SAFE undertakes a rigorous screening process to find the ideal placement. We carefully review applications, check references, and conduct site visits, with the goal of finding a long-term home that will benefit both horse and adopter. After a horse is placed into its forever home, annual follow-up visits are conducted to ensure the animal's continued well-being and SAFE will take a horse back if its adopter can’t continue to care for it.

Despite our years of success helping horses in the local area, SAFE remains a small, modest organization that operates on a shoestring budget and works hard to make every penny count. We rely on public donations for 77% of our operating income, and our average donation amount is $15. The majority of the funds we raise are used to feed, house, care for and train our horses‚ essentially paying for everything possible to ensure them a safe and productive future. We have minimal management expenses, no fundraising budget, and only one paid employee. The heart of SAFE is our volunteers, from our Board of Directors to our weekend warriors out on the farm, an incredible group of people who believe in SAFE's mission and give the best of their talents and energy to make it succeed.

The Society has been a part Norfolk County since 1953, looking after animals both large and small.

Now located in the industrial section of Simcoe at 24 Grigg Drive, SDHS has a 3.5 acre property purchased from the County in 2004.

S.H.A.R.E. is a non-for profit organization that takes in unwanted, abused and neglected horses. The horses undergo rehabilitation, training and medical treatment and are then put up for adoption.

Not only does S.H.A.R.E. take in horses that are unwanted by their owners but it also takes in horses from abuse and neglect cases. We have several humane investigators that work with us to make sure that the horses in the area are being treated humanely. Once we receive a horse from a situation like that, rehabilitation is the first priority. The horses must be brought to a healthy weight and must learn to trust humans. This takes much time and effort on the founder and volunteers of S.H.A.R.E. but the reward is worth the work.

If you are looking to volunteer in the community and make a difference, S.H.A.R.E. is always looking for hard working volunteers to help us feed and take care of the horses. Feeding is a big job and the more volunteers the merrier. We also need help grooming and socializing our horses once the feeding is done. Mission Capabilities and Definitions
1. Primary Mission: Search for Lost Persons— Southeast Pennsylvania Search and Rescue's (SEPASAR) primary mission is to locate lost persons and provide such first aid as may be necessary to those located. This mission is accomplished by dispatching mounted search personnel to the scene and under the direction of a search operations and or search planning ICS function search areas designated consistent with rider and horse safety.

2. Second Mission: Technical Large Animal Rescue Assistance—On request from extrication or rescue personnel provide expertise in the areas of extricating large animals from industrial, farm, environmental, or road accidents. SEPASAR personnel are familiar with horses and other large animals and can provide expertise in how to lift such animals, how to handle such animals and to avoid unnecessary injury to rescuers or animals.

3. Third Mission: Disaster Relocation of Livestock—On request from the EMA participates in the preplanning for and establishment of federally mandated reception and shelter areas for livestock displaced during a disaster. This would include surveying sites, establishing equipment lists, opening and operating sites, and eventually closing down such shelters. Supervising spontaneous volunteers and cooperating with other agencies would be expected.

4. Fourth Mission: Emergency Transportation—On request from the EMA provide the use of member owned horse trailers and or tow vehicles in an emergency caused by transportation accident stranding animals on the highway or weather conditions such that normal vehicles are not capable of being used. The safety of members shall be considered in answering such requests.

Standardbred Retirement Foundation
Mission

The Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF) is a non-profit, tax exempt organization created to care for, rehabilitate and secure lifetime adoption of non-competitive racehorses, to ensure their proper care with follow up, and combine the needs of youth at risk with these horses in therapeutic equine programs to benefit both.

History
The SRF was founded and created in 1989 by Mrs. Judith Bokman, wife of a prominent Equine Practitioner in New Jersey, Dr. Stephen Bokman DVM. When she realized what was happening to the Standardbreds that could no longer be competitive as racehorses, she contacted Mrs. Paula Campbell, wife of Hall of Fame Standardbred Driver John Campbell, who joined Mrs. Bokman in the development of the SRF. Later in the development process, the Youth Programs were incorporated into the SRF. It was granted exemption from Federal Income Tax status as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit Foundation in 1991.

Although horseracing is a multi-billion dollar industry, the Standardbred racing industry has made no provisions to support these grand horses when their racing careers came to an end. Some horses end their careers at a young age due to injuries or lack of racing ability, but with the rest and rehabilitation provided by SRF, these lovely animals become wonderful riding, driving, eventing, trail horses, and participate in all disciplines of riding and driving. However, some retire from racing and are not healthy enough to be transitioned to a new career. As a result, the SRF steps in to provide the rescue services necessary to ensure that these noble horses are retired with the dignity and care they deserve with the intent of finding them permanent homes; many are never adopted due to physical condition or age and remain under the SRF's care at various boarding facilities.

Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc.
Since November 2007, Leighton Farm and then Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc. has aided the placement of 600 horses. In 2008, TPR placed over 150 horses. This number is three times the placement rate of most non profits that do this type of work. In order to continue this work, we created a 501(c)(3) non profit. In 2012, TPR changed it's name to Thoroughbred Placement Resources, Inc to reflect our focus on the broader work of rehoming and retraining horses and being a resource for others helping these horses.

TPR is run completely by volunteers using donations, no one draws a salary and all money donated goes directly to help Thoroughbreds.

The main goal of Thoroughbred Placement and Rescue, Inc. is to improve the lives of Thoroughbred racehorses. We accomplish this through a multifaceted approach:

TPR, Inc. is a resource for those who wish to learn how to place retiring Thoroughbred racehorses. We counsel, consult and teach others how to to successfully transition, retrain and find homes for them.

We successfully transition and retrain racehorses into other disciplines; and teach these techniques and philosophies to others. Horses come to Leighton Farm to enjoy transitioning and training. Clark's training techniques are proactive, using the horse's previous experiences as a springboard to teach them to integrate into a new life off the track.

We strive to improve the reputation of the Thoroughbred by providing correct information about this wonderful breed. Kimberly Clark, founder of TPR has written a book, ‚"New Track, New Life" to promote correct training principles through better understanding of ex-racers. It is currently being developed into a dvd series. A clinic series is being created to teach horsemen how to better understand and train retired Thoroughbred racehorses.

The Tulsa SPCA served as Tulsa’s only non-government animal rescue and adoption program in Tulsa until the 1950s. It was founded during a meeting in a concerned Tulsan’s home mainly to help homeless dogs and cats and to protect against abuse of draft animals used to do tilling on farms and heavy work in the mines and oil fields.

USERL operates in regions across NC, VA, IN, and KY. We are dedicated to the compassionate care of all equines. The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's shady course begins at the Orenda Pavilion and winds its way through the Saratoga Spa State Park, listed as a National Historic Landmark and distinguished by its classical architecture. Post time is 8 a.m. for the Kids Fun Run and 8:30 a.m. for the Run For The Horses 5K. Trophies and medals will be awarded to top 3 men and women overall and in each age category, with prizes for all Fun Run participants.

Enjoy entertainment and refreshments after the race with hydration provided by Hint Water. “Every summer, the equine athletes at the Saratoga Race Course run their hearts out for us,” says TRF Annual Fund Director Lisa Craig.  “On September 3, we’re turning the tables and will be running for them.  It’s a wonderful opportunity to educate the public about our longstanding mission to provide these equine athletes with the  dignified retirement they deserve.”

The familiar big and white sign had become my own personal landmark over the years. On the outskirts of Sealy, Texas, just north of I-10 and Port City Stockyards, it signaled the countdown: 29 minutes to go before reaching my parents’ farm. This time, there was something about the image that touched my heart—the kneeling cowboy in front of a cross, the horse in tow, and the simple lettering: “All Around Cowboy Church.” The collage of symbols called to me as I navigated the mix of dually trucks, cattle trailers, SUVs, and the occasional motorcycle passing to and fro on Highway 36.

The young Abercrombie-clad teen sitting next to me woke me from my reverie. “We should visit the All Around Cowboy Church, Mom,” she piped up. I realized immediately that my child and I could both benefit from some old-fashioned, rugged church going. I was craving something deeper, something more organic and natural, something … wholesome. I wanted more than just an experiment. I wanted an experience, a departure from padded pews.

The next Sunday morning we sped toward Sealy to make the 10 a.m. service, and my daughter asked if Pastor Sonny Rice would do rope tricks. Truth be told, I wasn’t sure myself, but we were both just happy to be wearing jeans to church.

That one service, it turns out, ended up inspiring me to chase cowboy churches around Texas. My odessey revealed that the movement is strictly cultural (Western) and often lacking in artifice (walls). Leery of organized religion and spooked by the evangelical trappings of mega-churches (wide-screen video conferencing, etc.), the proudly independent—ranch hands and cowgirls and your average Texans—worship at these cowboy churches. To them, simplicity is more important than liturgy. Jesus is Lord. Period.

Thanks to my small-town, horse-crazed heritage, I saw myself in these country folks. I met people emblematic of the Western way—and the people drawn to it. Practical independence, not ideology, was valued here. And though I expected campfire and barbed wire, not wireless, and while a few congregations were little more than a collection of cowpokes around a fishing hole, many of the cowboy churches we visited were technology-forward and website-savvy. Some ventured into radio and television, others created sophisticated networks to spread their message of salvation.

It may have taken me a half-dozen pastors in Stetsons, but I eventually discovered the old-fashioned religion and common horse sense that have been a practical part of the Western way of life for generations. Dare I say that I found a version of Jesus’ own open-air ministry?

"Come as you are,” Pastor Sonny told me over the phone. “We welcome everyone—drunk, doped up, don’t have to have a suit on. It doesn’t matter.” And he wasn’t kidding. It’s perfectly fine to wear dirty boots and spurs to a cowboy church. Here, a person’s inside matters more than the outside.

Sprinkled among many happy families sat a few quiet, ill-kempt souls, shaking out the cobwebs after a night of carousing. An exhausted, tousle-haired single mom sat with her wriggling brood. One young couple wore matching Western shirts and sat in starry- eyed wedded bliss.

Pastor Sonny and his co-pastor wife, Gloria, regularly witness people letting go of their anger to get free and healed from illnesses in miraculous ways.

“We support missions in Mexico to reach the vaqueros,” says Rice. “We help down-and-out cowboys with food and God’s word through the Rockin’ W Rodeo Ministries, too.”

This was no backwoods place, however. The spacious wooden church was created by intelligent design, and I’m not speaking of our Heavenly Father. It was a human architect who blended ruggedness and technology on these scenic 48 acres with ponds, buildings, and grazing horses. Inside, horseshoes adorned the steps leading up to the wooden platform stage. A metal Lone Star hung on the wall alongside a large State of Texas flag. A Navajo blanket was spread on another step and served as knee padding at the altar.

I don't think the author meant this to be a suspense story, but it qualifies. There were parts that raised my anxiety to lip-biting level and until the last pages I wasn't sure how things would end. The premise alone is enough to raise eyebrows if not blood pressure. A Washington, D.C., accountant and adult beginner with horses, decides on a midlife change. She and her husband, who knows even less, buy a Texas ranch where she plans to rescue Thoroughbred racehorses needing their own career change because of injury or ineptitude.

I was drawn by the drama of these horses; lives depicted with the kind of good writing that sets you smack dab in the middle of the many perilous situations in which she finds herself often alone and clueless. For example, at 3 a.m. she debates whether or not to insert pieces of rubber hose up the nostrils of a miserable and breathing-impaired 3-year-old, who has been bitten by a rattlesnake. Complicating matters, she doesn't have (at least for starters) even minimal equine paramedic skills (but she does become handy at speed-dialing the vet, even in the dark). Nor is she savvy about stallions, one of which she takes in early on. Fortunately, he turns out to be a fairly polite gentleman. Nearly every horse she takes in has some quirky past, jeopardized present or iffy future. Many are born aristocrats of the track, with names such as Seattle Slew and Princequillo in their pedigrees.

Enter colorful track characters (many who care), helpful neighbors and gallant veterinarians who give discounts while dealing with tracheotomies, infected coffin bones, shredded legs and more. Soon after come hunter-jumper trainers, dressage riders and even recreational trail riders who find her sanctuary a source of riding-horse talent. One of the funniest parts, and I am not sure she intended it to be that way, is when she takes part in a natural horsemanship colt-starting clinic. Her budget does not allow for a professional, so she decides she is going to learn how to do it herself as most adoption prospects want a horse already started. As the famous clinician calls Yoda directives, she feels her filly's back muscles tense. She pulls the fuming filly over to the clinician, tossing her human pride down, and says, "I need some help, please." He replies, "Well, yes, I know you do."

Reardon survives through pluck and persistence and what she calls her stubborn "inner teenager" simply refusing to give up. So today, she is the founder and executive director of LoneStar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers (LOPE), successfully placing more than 145 horses through the ranch facility near Austin, Texas, and transitioning another 580 through the LOPE Web site listing service. Her prose is crisp, honest, authentic, full of self-deprecating humor and a passion for doing what is right. I loved her many movie metaphors that kept me going to the last page where she says "the reality is that the horses saved me from a dull, ordinary life lacking in purpose, adventure and growth."

I am just glad she survived those adventures and can inspire others to get out and do whatever they can to help re-home these magnificent equine ex-athletes.

A Different Kind of Horse
Beth DeCaprio runs the Grace Foundation of Northern California, a highly organized rescue operation just east of Sacramento. She says her rescue and many others are seeing a different kind of surrender situation now than in earlier years.

"We're seeing not only horses that people don't want, but also horses they can no longer financially care for," she explains. While rescues around the country still have many older, starved, and sick animals, they also have something new: healthy, well-cared-for horses that owners simply can no longer afford.

Jill Curtis runs the Shiloh Horse Rescue and Sanctuary in Las Vegas, Nevada. During the last seven years, she's found good homes for 313 horses, and at any given time there are up to 75 unadoptable animals in sanctuary on her ranch. She, too, is taking in more healthy, sound horses with great potential. Jill says some of her best rescues come from the racing world when Thoroughbreds are cast aside after their careers have ended. She finds them new jobs.

For example, she found Pacific, an OTTB (off-the-track Thoroughbred), for her sister Sarah, and the two are now eventing at the preliminary level.

Jill and Beth offer the following guidelines for a successful adoption, organized into three important checklists. Begin with yourself.

Your Wants, Needs
Think through your motivation and goals for adopting a horse.

  • What do you want? A mount for casual recreational riding? Something you can compete on? A pasture pet to be company for a horse you already own? Obviously, your answer will affect the breadth and depth of your search, as well as what you can expect to pay in adoption fees (more on that in a moment).
  • What's your skill level with horses? Are you experienced enough to work through the trust issues that come with a neglected or abused animal? Can you work with a young, unstarted horse? If you haven't ridden since childhood or are new to riding and/or ownership, a quiet, serviceably sound senior horse will be a better choice. (You'll be doing no horse any favors if you take on more than you can competently handle.)
  • Do you have a suitable place to keep a horse (or a second horse) and enough money for feed, hoof and veterinary care, and other maintenance? True, your new horse might cost you only a nominal adoption fee to acquire--typically from around $200 to $600 for a rehabbed horse, though a specialty breed with training could come with a fee of up to $2,000 or more. (And some rescues waive the adoption fees in special circumstances.) Still, as with all horse acquisitions, it's the ongoing maintenance costs of the animal that are your true expense. So, any way you look at it, put the notion of a "free" horse out of your mind.

Consider The Source
Your self-assessment is done, but before you begin looking at specific horses, check out the rescue organization that's offering them for adoption.

  • Is it a registered non-profit? If the rescue has 501(c)(3) status, it means the operators have gone through some extra work to define and run their business. There are no regulated industry standards, and not all rescue centers are well run, so it's worth knowing whether the proprietors have at least gone to this effort.
  • Does the rescue rehabilitate horses from neglectful or abusive situations before trying to place them with new owners? It should. If it doesn't, you might wind up bringing home a special-needs horse that requires a demanding regimen to be brought back to good health.
  • Are you being pressured? Back away from any attempts to hurry you into a decision. The best rescue operators want the adoption to succeed as much as you do and will spend the time it takes to make sure you find a suitable match. Again, adopting a horse is a huge responsibility, financially and emotionally. Take the
    time it takes to make a prudent decision.
  • Can you return the horse if it doesn't work out? A good rescue will allow you a time period for settling in together and will take the horse back if you feel you've made a mistake.
  • Does the rescue have good references? Find others who've adopted from the facility you're considering and ask them about their experience during and after the adoption process.

The meeting offers veterinarians the cultural knowledge and field training to assist struggling communities where working equids are used for subsistence. Attendees will gain hands-on experience serving equids in impoverished areas of Vera Cruz, where hundreds of horses are in need of saddle fitting, disease treatment, castration and other services.
