TTR: What's the most amazing thing you've ever seen a horse do?
Foote: When our then 2-year-old daughter was perched on one of our draft-horse-cross geldings in the corrals, another horse got loose and crowded up behind him. He was annoyed, but he knew he couldn't buck or kick out because he was holding a child. So he carefully picked up one hind leg without shifting his back at all and very slowly with that leg pushed the other horse away from him.
TTR: Besides riding, what hobbies/activities do you most enjoy?
Foote: Photography; making things, like sewing clothes and harness leathers; traveling on short trips with a purpose; meeting people; jumping into situations that have elements of surprise. I love finding myself in a strange city. And really, for me there is no division between work and hobby. When you live as your own boss, you live by your own wits.
TTR: What was the last non-horse book you read?
Foote: The End of Elsewhere: Travels Among the Tourists, by Taras Grescoe.
TTR: What was the last movie you saw?
Foote: Hidalgo.
TTR: Finish the sentence, "People would be surprised to know that I...
Foote: ...still do what I do."
TTR: Explain what you mean by your philosophy, "Leap then look."
Foote: If you pre-plan everything, why do it? We don't plan anything, and as a consequence, we've lived a very interesting life.
TTR: What advice would you give readers considering following in your footsteps?
Foote: Don't look at us. Don't follow our footsteps. Create your own. If you want to do something, just jump into it. Blaze your own trail. TTR
