Trail Riding Tools to Take with You

Pack emergency staples in your saddlebags the next time you venture out. Photo by Michelle Anderson.

Back Country Horseman of America's Peg Greiwe says friends accuse her of taking "everything but the kitchen sink" with her on trail rides. But, when in need, they're sure happy to be riding with such a prepared person. Here's a look at just a few of the things that are always inside Peg's saddle bags:

•  Map of area
•  Compass
•  Flagging tape (to mark your trail)
•  Permanent marker (to write on flagging tape)
•  Whistle (to call for help if your voice gets tired)
•  Spare reins
•  Leather pieces for equipment repair
•  Several energy snack bars
•  Bottled water
•  Waterproof matches or lighter
•  Tissue
•  Flashlight
