What Kind of Clip?

So you think you might want to clip your horse for winter. There are three reasons to clip:

* For quick drying after exercise

* Makes grooming easier

* You'll be showing in a warmer climate

What kind of clip will keep him warm, but also allow him to dry off and cool down more quickly given your circumstances?

Body clip: For horses that compete in warm climates in the winter months. A body clip removes all the hair, including on the legs, face and underbelly.

Hunter clip: The entire body, minus the legs from the elbows down, a patch for the saddle, and the horse. It's another good option for horses competing in the winter in warmer climates.

Blanket clip: Removes the hair on neck, shoulders and belly. Leaves the hair where the blanket goes.

Trace clip: This clip removes the hair along the flanks from the haunches and up the neck. It is good for horses that work in the winter but remain in their colder climates.

Before you clip your horse, make sure you have enough blankets to keep him warm, and your clipper blades are sharp and oiled.
