Plan Your Three Chimney Farm Tour During WEG: Have You Made Your Reservation?

You?re planning to visit some of Lexington?s Thoroughbred farms while you’re at the World Equestrian Games, I’m sure. I?ve posted about this previously on this blog (see my post on visiting Calumet Farm) but it’s time to bring up the subject again, particularly because today the subject is Three Chimneys Farm.

I think that Three Chimneys would probably be at or near the top of everyone?s list of farms to visit in the Bluegrass. If you even hope to lay eyes on Smarty Jones, Dynaformer, War Chant, Point Given and the other great Three Chimneys stallions, you?d better make a call now and get on a reservations list. During the Kentucky Derby, they have been known to sell out six months in advance.

That sort of a demand should tell you just what a treat this farm is. So don’t miss it!

I spoke with Jen Roytz, marketing and communications director for Three Chimneys today, and she informed me that the only way you can get through the gates on Old Frankfort Pike is if you make a reservation with the group tour company Horse Capital Tours.

As you may or may not know, Keeneland will be racing the last weekend of the Games, and it is Sales season in Lexington, so the farms will be busy preparing horses, bringing in new purchases, and entertaining clients from around the world. Still, farms like Three Chimneys understand that many people attending WEG are also part of the Thoroughbred world or are racing fans, so the door to this great farm is open, through Horse Capital Tours.

I?ve been to Three Chimneys several times and while I am always starstruck by the stallions, it seems like it always feeding time or breeding time or they have to be brought in or brought out so it’s not like you have a lot of time to gaze into Smarty Jones?s eyes and say, ?You would make the most beautiful show hunter…? So, the tours are dazzling, but they move right along. Bring a spare memory card and batteries for your camera, you’ll need it!

But as famous as the horses are, the architecture and gardens are just as impressive. It’s worth it just to see the Seattle Slew statue. This farm was his home–his only home as a breeding stallion!

I can remember when Slew ?o Gold was in his sunset years and had a special retirement stall to accommodate his infirmities. This is no ordinary horse farm, and this is not just another pretty place. Trust me, you will be disappointed if you don’t make plans now!

By the way, don’t expect to see Big Brown at Three Chimneys when you go; he’s been in Australia all summer, doing double-duty as a dual-hemisphere stallion, along with another Three Chimneys rising star, Red Giant, and won’t be back in time for WEG.

Note: If you’re thinking big about WEG, Three Chimneys has decided to make the farm available as a site for private parties during the World Equestrian Games. So if you need the ultimate party place, this is one of the best you’ll find. Send an email to Laterri@threechimneys.com for more information. Just be sure to invite me!
