Business Spotlight: Foxden Equine

Foxden Equine was established in 1996 and founded by Dr. Melyni Worth, PhD, PAS. Located in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, Foxden is dedicated to the research and development of a broad range of leading high-quality supplements that benefit the health and well-being of your equines.

Q: What product(s) or services do you sell?

A: Nutritional products, supplements and advice. Foxden Equine specializes in an array of leading nutritional products and supplements. These include products for GI tract, joint, immune, metabolic and muscle support, along with behavior modification. As an added bonus, Dr. Melyni Worth, PhD, our in-house nutritionist and owner of Foxden Equine, provides nutritional expertise and advice.

Q: How, when and why did you get started in this line of business?

Dr. Worth was doing nutritional consultations and realized that there were several nutrient products that were needed but were not readily available, so she went about obtaining and providing them.

Q: What do you offer your equestrian clients that makes you different from your competitors?

A: Tried and tested, well-researched products that work and are developed by a board-certified nutritionist who is also an active rider and competitor. We formulate our products to meet needs we observe in the industry. Foxden Equine is a member of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), which means we’re required to meet standards of quality and accountability.

Q: What is your best-selling product to date, and what do you think is the secret to its success?

A: Quiessence, the magnesium/chromium supplement. It sells well because it is effective and works. Quiessence has been on the market for 20 years; it’s often been copied but has never been equaled.

Q: Do you have any plans to expand or diversify your product line in the future, and if so, how?

A: We are always working to see what problems we can solve and the best way to solve them. Since several of us are active riders and competitors, we are out there in the field and hear the problems and sometimes even deal with the problems ourselves. It gives us great insight into what fellow horsemen are dealing with and what is needed.

Q: What do you like best about your clientele?

A: Foxden Equine’s clientele are astounding for several reasons. First, their commitment to their equines’ best interests is truly motivating. Our customers prove time and time again that the products we work so hard to make and maintain are working in the nutritional playing field. To take that a step further, the overall care that our customers provide is exceptional. Countless times we’ve seen our customers competing in their respected disciplines, and Foxden is always well represented; the proof is the horse itself! Finally, there is the loyalty of our customers: They come to us for nutritional advice and a sample, and they leave with answered questions and a product that proves itself to work. Most of our customers have been with us for years!

Q: If there is one piece of advice you could offer people in the market for products like yours, what would it be?

A: The best advice we can give is, when looking for a supplement or solution, to make sure you do your research and find the product that you feel works best for your specific case. Seek out a certified nutritionist and ask specific questions; after all, it is that person’s job to help find the best solution to your nutritional needs. Lastly, and most importantly, realize that there is no magic cure for all the problems that arise in the field of nutrition.
