The following year, at the 2010 Winter Equestrian Festival, Ward and Sapphire defended their title in the Consulting Finale Grand Prix CSI 5* and claimed the victory for a second time.
In addition, the pair finished second at the 2009 FEI Rolex World Cup Finals in Las Vegas in one of the most dramatic finishes in World Cup history. Ward later went on to make history aboard Sapphire when he won the FTI $250,000 Grand Prix for a record fourth time at the 2009 Hampton Classic. Also in 2009 the pair won the $1,000,000 CN International Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Canada.
